A black box in your car? Some see a source of tax revenue The devices would track every mile you drive —possibly including your location — and the government would use the data to draw up a tax bill. www.latimes.com/nation/la-na-roads-black-boxes-20131027,0,6090226.story#axzz2ixa2sy9O

More proof how the USA is becoming the cold war USSR under Obama

More proof how the USA is becoming the cold war USSR under Obama Indeed. It's actually hard to imagine the tax purpose of a black box. The current per-gallon fuel tax does a pretty good job of charging people on a per-mile basis for road use. A black box doing the same thing is a redundancy at best. Heck, add in 'Ez-Pass' and it's doubly redundant. However, a black box that a driver would have to log on to before driving - perhaps by entering a driver's license number - could be used to prevent people from driving cars on suspended licenses, or stealing cars... and to issue all sorts of traffic tickets. That's the only sort of black box that actually makes any sense, or that does anything new.

Nasty powers of technology to impose centralized monitoring- then control. Monitoring and tracking travel in a way the USSR could only have wet dreams about. Scary, scary stuff. Sure, legal limits could be imposed. But the lamp has been rubbed, genie is out.....and this one may not be grateful for being released.....

Best to keep Leviathan out of as many things as possible. Including one's car.

Almost a decade ago, when my mom passed, I was cleaning out her house. Mailman came by, scanning barcodes on the side of each mailbox in the townhome community. I told the post man that seemed kind of neat, what was he doing? He told me the central office timed his route down to 90 seconds between boxes, and if was more than that he had to have a reasonable excuse, or be punished. Yep--- nothing will change with monitoring technology........

I have no doubt that if the government can control something it will. Then tax it.

Yeah, just think--the next time you go in for an emissions inspection, you might also have to submit to a black box inspection (not to mention the $50 fee for the BB inspections).
I predict that Maryland will be the first state to start a black box inspection program (accompanied by a fee, of course).

And how are they going to verify it's actually you who is entering your driver's license #? [maybe they'll start putting steering wheel cams that snap your picture when you enter your driver's license #, then send it to the NSA for validation...]

I dispute your claim that "black boxes" have been in cars for almost 10 years. "CAN" systems have been in cars for that long, but "CAN" systems lack one function of black box systems, and that is keeping a time-data record of the communication between subsystems on the bus (i.e., a time record of the state of the monitored components). In the case of aircraft black boxes, the black box keeps a record of pilot inputs, systems' responses, and other flight data over time. I don't believe current car "black boxes" do that (record the data over time), nor do they all have GPS capability. However, there are add-ons that can plug into the car's computer port that will record the messages sent over the CAN bus. Once the manufacturers incorporate those "add-ons" to the CAN systems (including GPS capability), then we'll have real black boxes in our cars. However, there is another possibility, and that is, instead of having a recording "black box" in each vehicle, they're adding a module, connected to the CAN system that transmits the data (either continuously, or in spurts) to a Big Brother "black box" collection system for analysis or whatever purpose the gov't can devise...

Now, CAN systems can only count cycles - the number of times the ignition switch is turned on and off. And, while it can track total vehicle mileage, it doesn't track individual trips. It does track a multitude of sensor inputs such as vehicle speed. Much like the airplane black boxes, the data is erased after a certain period of time, to be replaced by fresh data. CAN systems were intended to assist techs with diagnoses.

Well, the Democrat-controlled Senate did pass a bill towards a "black box" application to raise money, but the Republican-controlled House shot it down.

Obama gets blamed for everything because everything wrong with America since 2008 is his fault and worsening each day. He has ruined this nation

When it comes to taxes the pols don’t care if something is redundant as long as the can get their hands on more of our money.

Don’t bet on it. Just as some folks believe “If it should be done it can be done” there are others that believe “If it can be done it should be done”. Both beliefs usually end up sticking it to the average citizen.

Yeah, especially when everyone knows that every bad thing in the world is Bush’s fault.

Oh but they do. See, if they can make something a crime, and fine you for doing it, it's much better than a tax. Because it's a crime... and you can demonize people for doing it... further invade their lives, and most importantly, its NOT a tax - it's a fine.

I don't see redundant taxes and making something a crime so you can impose a fine as being mutually exclusive. Our rulers can, and do, do both.
