The atmosphere is preparing to send part of the polar vortex southward toward the United States next week with an outbreak of arctic air and lake-effect snow. The polar vortex is a large pocket of very cold air, typically the coldest air in the Northern Hemisphere, which sits over the polar region. Occasionally, this pocket of very cold air can get dislodged farther south than normal, leading to cold outbreaks in Canada and the U.S. The main blast of cold air associated with the plunging polar vortex will swing southeastward into the Central and Eastern states spanning Sunday, Nov. 9, to Friday, Nov. 14, 2014. The worst of the cold will be felt from Fargo, North Dakota, and Minneapolis to Chicago and St. Louis beginning on Tuesday and continuing through the middle and latter part of the week. Heating demands will jump and people will be reaching for winter coats before venturing outdoors. Chilly days and cold nights will be felt farther along in the South and along the Atlantic Seaboard late in the week and into next weekend. The cold air will be accompanied by gusty winds, which will send AccuWeather RealFeelĀ® temperatures plunging into the single digits and teens in the north and into the 20s and 30s in part of the Deep South. www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/polar-vortex-to-vist-central-u/36890008

With all of the modern technology available to anyone with a computer, it's funny that "meteorologist" is even a thing anymore. Just put some hot chick on the TV to read the map that pretty much any layman can figure out on his own and probably be just as accurate with their prediction

Polar Vortex to Blast 200 Million People With Arctic Air www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/polar-vortex-to-vist-central-u/36890008Arctic air associated with the polar vortex will lunge into the North Central United States early next week and will expand southward and eastward to affect about 200 million people as the week progresses. December-like cold will be felt farther along in the South and along the Atlantic Seaboard. The cold will rush into the South Central states by the middle of next week, but will not reach the Atlantic coast until later next week and into next weekend. RealFeel Temperatures in these eastern areas will dip into the 20s and 30s and will make it uncomfortable for many outdoor activities. According to AccuWeather.com Long Range Expert Paul Pastelok, "Temperatures will plunge to 20 degrees below average in parts of the South." In New York City, it is possible temperatures may not get out of the 30s on one or more days from late next week into next weekend.

OK, here's an idea. If we point all of these wind turbines north, reverse the power and turn them into giant fans, would it be possible to blow the polar vortex back to the Arctic Circle?

No we're not going to be like the mid west, but it will change us here as a moderated system.

They're saying nice, in the 60s, through Wednesday, then in the 40s. We've already been there. Periodic 40s is normal for this time of year in this area. A polar vortex, to me, is only a problem if it begins single-digit temps and I have to start wondering which plants I'll need to replace next season.

Polar Vortex: The Most Misused Weather Term of 2014Nov 9, 2014, 7:57 PM ET
By GINGER ZEE and DAN PECKThe polar vortex is not moving over the United States this week, regardless of what you may have heard or read, but that doesn't mean that winter weather is not only starting early, but already packing a punch.
The polar vortex is real, and the meteorological community has known about it and used the term for decades. It is an almost always present upper-level circulation that hangs out over the poles. It is not at the surface and is not related to every push of cold air.link

We've had a frost. It was around 38 when I took a walk this morning. Pretty typical for northern Maryland, where I live.
