This article describes an innovation in concrete. During the mix, it incorporates bacterial spores and calcium lactate; when cracks form, water reaches the biodegradable capsules containing these things. The bacteria consume the calcium lactate and excrete limestone, repairing the crack.

It will be interesting to find out if the "bugged" concrete is as strong as uncracked concrete... Or will they need to develop a super bacillus...

I have living concrete for my front porch but it only lives to self destruct. When a crack forms, salt can get down within and automagically accelerate the process.

My guess is the bacteria will mutate so they *eat* the concrete.

My guess is the bacteria will mutate so they *eat* the concrete. Well, that's one way to get rid of a crack: turn it into a big gap...

I got a big gap at the top step that separated from the top slab. I guess the house has settled over 20 yrs. Not sure how to fix it there is no backing just a gap that goes down about 12 inches

I got a big gap at the top step that separated from the top slab. I guess the house has settled over 20 yrs. Not sure how to fix it there is no backing just a gap that goes down about 12 inches So now the steps now form a unit separate from the rest of the porch? It may have started out as two separate units joined by mortar and either the porch unit or the steps unit settled more than the other. Does it look like the steps "unit" has tilted away from the porch "unit" at the top of the steps? Can you post some pics?

Sounds like a good plot for a horror film.
