We never, never take beach vacations.... we are more of a mountain and lake kind of family!!
This year I decided to let my two boys pick where we were going and they chose OBX.... we leave Friday for 9 days. Well, it just figures they pick the year of the shark attack!

Thanks... I'm sure we will have a great time! Just bummed about the shark attacks, I am anxious to see how many people are still going in the water.

Never say "never." BTW, don't go in the water with someone who can swim faster than you... Don't forget to take advantage of all the National Park Service's talks and demonstrations up and down OBX (assuming they still do that).

There is still a lot to do, I was just looking at everything today. We'll be in good shape!!

Here. Have a handy "shark recognition picture" for your book. File this one under "great white shark" and "range: too close" Glad to help!

cowboyz any lake or mountains close by you recommend Not sure how close you are looking for....
Smith Mountain Lake in VA is my absolute favorite. It's close to Roanoke, VA. (5 hrs from me) Deep Creek is good too, not a lot to do but relaxing. (4.5 hr from me) Lake Lure, NC is beautiful and there is a good amount to do there, not too fare from Ashville and Biltmore Estates for day trips. (6.5 hrs I believe) If you are looking for quiet, I would say Lake Anna in VA. This trip is all about relaxation, not much to do at all. (2.5 hrs from me)
With all of the above I would recommend taking a boat if you have one, if not think about renting one if you can!

Many years ago I was on a project in CA and we were staying at the Marina Inn in Dana Point, CA. Rumor at the motel was they had caught a Great White and had it hung up down at the marina. I walked over to have a look and spied a shark hanging by its tail. I wasn't impressed. Somehow that was the shark I thought everyone was talking about. Turns out I was looking in the wrong place. Somehow I'd missed seeing the Great White. I wandered around a bit and when I finally saw it (up really close) I darn near crapped my pants! It was quite dead but still scared the heck out of me.

I bet, not sure I would want to come face to face with a Great White.

It's good you're leaving Friday. Saturday, the bridge (yes, there's only the one) gets backed up like Hillary's emails didn't. It's horrible.

We are stayn in Kill Devil Hills. We got a place on the Sound, its beautiful!! Which Sound? I'm fuzzy on the boundary between Currituck Sound and Albemarle Sound, etc. My Sound actvities were further south in Pamilico Sound in the Ocracoke Inlet area.

Couple of nice lighthouses within easy reach by car. You're also really close to where the Wright Brothers proved that if man was meant to fly he would not, in fact, need wings.

Yes, we will be going to the Wright Brothers and definitely going to see a couple of the lighthouses. Went to the beach all day yesterday and I'm happy to report no shark attacks. Yesterday evening we went to the The Dunes.

This is from the NPS website. Shark Awareness
July 1, 2015—Over the last week, three people have been injured by shark bites in Avon, Waves, and Ocracoke, NC. The presence of sharks requires that we take precautions while enjoying the resource. More »Fortunately those areas are south of you. The NPS schedules interesting events regarding the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Here is a list of NPS events scheduled for the next two weeks: schedule. Unfortunately the demonstration of the U.S. Lifesaving Service's use of the breeches buoy to rescue shipwreck victims is not on that schedule.
