I must have missed something... where in this Target" story does the First Lady say the fellow shopper asked her to reach up for something on the shelf was because of some kind of "racism?"... I've done the same thing many times in my experiences because I am rather tall... (did it in Walmart just last week... got a lady 4 packages of instant soup and crackers off the tops shelf)... I have even volunteered to do that more times than I've been asked to do it when I saw someone trying to reach something on a high shelf... (especially if she was good looking )... I don't remember what "race/color" the shopper was... I've often been asked to get something from a high shelf, I am always ready to oblige and I have never considered it demeaning, nor racist in the least. Neither did Michelle, when she first told the story on Letterman. It's only since race riots have become their next political advantage that it's become "racism".

She still didn't when she talked with People magazine:
"I mean, even as the first lady – during that wonderfully publicized trip I took to Target, not highly disguised, the only person who came up to me in the store was a woman who asked me to help her take something off a shelf. Because she didn't see me as the first lady, she saw me as someone who could help her. Those kinds of things happen in life. So it isn't anything new."
Nothing about race here... just about not being recognized as the First Lady... and the woman asked her to help, not just to retrieve something from the higher shelf...

I'm not sure how you can make that claim,. The interview with the first couple was all about how they have had to deal with racism. She related that story in that context. Unfortunately, she had a totally different story back in 2012. She got caught in a lie, plain and simple. These two are so shallow. But at least they have folks like you that will try their darndest to deflect for them. We are expected to buy her latest version and I don't.

Her latest version seems to be the same as the earlier version... the writer of the article in the OP... and the originator of the OP... are the ones who tried to make it different... not the First Lady...
The interview with People was not only about racism... but other unusual things that the Obamas had encountered since becoming President and First Lady... (like not being recognized in Target)...

I guess we are going to just have to accept the fact that you are the only person in the world that doesn't see that Michelle was telling this story within the context of a discussion of racism and growing up black. Maybe be you can tell us why she brought up this Target story in the same sentence as relating how her poor husband was mistaken for a valet. Oh, the horror of being mistaken for a valet!

When it comes to Democrats, it's not so much about being mistaken for a valet. It's the horror of being asked to do anything that would help out their fellow human beings. That's what the government is for!

Like I said, she was commenting on unusual things that had happened before and after he was President... said those things like Target are just things that... happen... like I was mistaken for the manager in that Buffalo Wild Wings Friday night... (which I thought was a hoot)... I think she thought it was humorous that the woman didn't recognize her... only that she was taller than her, and might help her reach something on a high shelf... ... and no, I'm not alone... so you, and yours, go right ahead and believe whatever you want to believe... neither of us know at this point...
I also signed my autograph, "Best Wishes, Bo", in Louisville, Kentucky a long time ago for a man and his son who insisted that I was Bo Svenson... been mistaken for Nick Nolte several times... ever time in Atlanta, Ga...

So what "kinds of things happen in life" and why "isn't it anything new"? New about what- taking something down from a shelf because someone asked you to. Did it make her feel slighted? Maybe the short lady, along with the other shoppers, did not recognize Michelle as the First Lady because she was deliberately dressed a bit house-wifely to be incognito, even though Michelle felt she was not "not highly disguised". Really, this encounter happened several years ago- it wasn't earth shattering news then and certainly isn't now.

I believe that's exactly what I have been saying about this incident... which was nothing new... she'd likely been asked for such help before... or even offered it... since she's 5' 11"... nothing racist about it... nothing demeaning about it... such things do "just happen"...

How many of you posters... if you met the President and/or the First Lady in a Target... would not recognize who they are?... just curious... none, I bet...
I have told more than one woman that she looked like the First Lady... and they did... but I knew they weren't...
And she said it wasn't a big deal... but give it some thought... a woman goes into a Target store... can't reach something on a high shelf... and sees a tall woman that she doesn't recognize as the First Lady... and asks her for help... I bet if the woman ever knew, was embarrassed...
Why must you folks hate these people so much?... seriously?... is it just because they're Black?...

I certainly do not hate the Obamas, I don't even know them. The point is this was brought up by Michelle in a People article specifically about the Obamas encountering racism. The end of Michelle's commentary was "These kinds of things happen in life. It isn't anything new." Really, somebody asking you to help them get an article off of a shelf is now suddenly considered racist? What I do not like is anyone attempting to stir the racial pot over non-events.

The First Lady nowhere said that the Target incident was an act of racism... in fact it was the magazine who labeled the "interview with encounters" as one which included, but didn't say it was limited to, racists encounters... it's you guys who are saying it was only about racists encounters...
"The magazine billed the interview, which they said took place last week, as one that included 'encounters with racial prejudice.'”
"No one knew that was me," Obama said. "Because a woman actually walked up to me, right? I was in the detergent aisle, and she said — I kid you not — she said, 'Excuse me, I just have to ask you something.' And I thought, 'Oh, cover's blown.' She said, 'Can you reach on that shelf and hand me the detergent?' I kid you not. And the only thing she said — I reached up, because she was short, and I reached up, pulled it down. She said, 'Well, you didn't have to make it look so easy.' That was my interaction. I felt so good."
The "unusual" thing about this encounter... as the First lady pointed out... was the fact that the woman didn't recognize her... the First Lady even said she "felt so good" about it... a clear case of mistaken (non-)identity...
Some of you folks will stop at nothing to condemn and vilify these individuals... it's really a shame... (and after all the "Bushisms" of the previous administration)... I knew this was coming back in 2006... which is why I voted against Barack Obama in '08...

They have used their race as a weapon to silence any and all opposition to their Communist coup, they have used the power of government to attack and attempt to silence any and all opposition, and are using illegal organizations like the EPA to destroy any economic advancement. They have turned the DOJ into the NKVD where race is the only criteria for pursuing indictments, or ignoring them, he has flooded the country with illegal Democrats, and is using THEIR race as a weapon to keep them from being sent home, and to get them on welfare and Puppettax.
