You forgot the part about your walk to/from school was uphill... both ways... It WAS up a steep hill coming home... but we only had one set of feet between us, so my brother and I had to share. It's really getting deep in here...

Free range kids are a pedophiles dream.
And they can be found in any neighborhood.

You guys are just jealous that you aren't invited... The next time The Ragin' Cajun is stopping in let me know. I will bring dinner. That would be a blast, wouldn't it... but then, James has never been here... nor have I claimed that he has... but Matthew McConaughey was here a couple of weeks ago...

Free range kids are a pedophiles dream. And they can be found in any neighborhood. You are so right, Segram... Free range kids are not found in my neighborhood... and all the neighbors are watching... we are a "Circle of Hope"... organized by me... one mile in all directions...

I thought we weren't supposed to call people names around here... especially moderators... It was meant as a jest. But if it bothers you I'll edit it out. The "out of the ordinary" is what we as parents must watch out for with regard to our children... not the ordinary... like you "say"... you don't read about the "ordinary" in the newspaper... Of course. I point out that the fact you hear stories from so many sources tricks you into thinking these are everyday occurrences, when they almost never happen. I doubt the incidence of child crimes is much higher now than it was when I was a kid. It's probably lower. But people *think* it happens a lot because they get bombarded.

and 6 and 10-year-old children as far away as half-a-mile without proper supervision in not responsible... and illegal in most jurisdictions... I don't live where I grew up, so I don't know if they send buses for the grade school kids or not, now. Probably. I keep my eye on my 12-year-old granddaughter... and her 14 and 15 year-old friends when they ramble around the cow fields and hay barns around here... and this is a safe community... My mom knew where I was (and I did not lie about that - mostly), and if I did not come home when I was expected, she'd be out in the car looking. She wasn't hovering, as some parents do, but she was aware.

Jeffery Epstein probably stops by with Bill Clinton. That would have me worried too. You guys are just jealous that you aren't invited... Yeah... Those parties with Epstein and Clinton aren't really to my taste.

I have learned to trust my grands... tell them I'll trust them until they do something that shows me that I can't... and if they do, it will be harder for them to earn my trust again than it was originally...

Mine too... except that my dad was gone after I was 13... we didn't go anywhere without asking before we went... most of the time... I remember the time she caught us swimming in the neighbor's pond about half-a-mile from the house... I may still have a scar or two... might have saved our lives...

You were the one who insisted kids should be under adult supervision at all time. Naturally that would result in people speculating as to why you feel that way.

Good parenting... nothing to do with Epstein or Clinton... Why is it 'good parenting' to shelter your kids like that? Nobody said anything about sheltering kids all the time... (quote me if you think I did... or just STFU)...unless they were 6 and/or 10 years old... and age when they need adult supervision more than they don't need it...

At 10 I was going to the local neighborhood park by myself. I'd want my kids to be able to do the same. And they should, unless they live in a bad neighborhood.

Sorry, but we're all tired of your 'I didn't say what I said' routine. Hell, it was boring 10 years ago.

The out of the ordinary is always the big concern, it's a struggle trying to weigh giving your children the freedom to do things on their own. When I was a kid, we were always allowed to wander the neighborhood by ourselves, walk to school, walk to softball practice, walk to swim team practice, we did a lot without the watchful eye of our parents. I turned out okay but I was more watchful as a parent than mine were but they didn't have the fears that we have today.... times have changed.
To these parents I would say get your lazy asses up, take your kids to the park and spend some quality time with your kids, you are missing out on so much. They will be grown before you know it. There are a lot of freaks out there, a lot of bad things can happen. Give them the freedom when they are older and they have the ability to comprehend situations and make decisions. I don't think it should be against the law but I hope these parents are prepared to pay the price when the kids don't come home and it wasn't CPS that picked them up. What about injuries? Kids frequently get hurt playing at a park, do they expect someone else to tend to the needs of their child. Plan a schedule with neighbors where a parent is present at all times if you can't always be there. I think they are taking an unnecessary risk with their children's safety.
