Terrorist attacks and deaths hit record high, report shows Washington (CNN) – As terrorism increasingly becomes a tactic of warfare, the number of attacks and fatalities soared to a record high in 2012, according to a new report obtained exclusively by CNN. More than 8,500 terrorist attacks killed nearly 15,500 people last year as violence tore through Africa, Asia and the Middle East, according to the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism. That’s a 69% rise in attacks and an 89% jump in fatalities from 2011, said START, one of the world’s leading terrorism-trackers. Six of the seven most deadly groups are affiliated with al Qaeda, according to the group, and most of the violence was committed in Muslim-majority countries. The previous record for attacks was set in 2011 with more than 5,000 incidents; for fatalities the previous high was 2007 with more than 12,800 deaths. religion.blogs.cnn.com/2013/10/28/terrorist-attacks-and-deaths-hit-record-high-report-shows/

Not surprised one bit. Given the utter chaos of the "Arab Spring"-- arsenals have been disbursed, lawless areas abound from Libya, Egypt, Sinai, Syria, Iraq, Yemen...plenty of military-grade equipment being spread around...and the Sunnis and Shiites are sharpening their teeth on each other.

Given the superiority of the United States' armed forces and the fact that we're often involved in world conflicts to some degree, bringing those forces against others, it should not surprise anyone that asymmetrical warfare - terrorism - is on the rise. It is pretty much the only choice available to people who see themselves as oppressed. I expect it to continue to increase in both frequency and severity of the attacks. Eventually, someone will use a nuclear device again.

Obviously Middle East countries do not have a big enough military to wage actual war against us terrorism is their way of waging war A sign of really how weak those countries are

Someone will eventually let one go in a major city or cities here in the USA.

Russians via proxy? Will likely be tough to track down...

I just watched an episode of The Blacklist in which a fictional corporation hired a character to detonate a dirty bomb in Houston. This would close Houston as a port indefinitely and divert shipping to New Orleans and billions into the corporation's coffers for decades to come. It's plausible enough; I suspect the next thing will be corporate terrorism blamed on ideological terrorists.

If someone can find a way to avoid linkage, and raise a heck of a profit, it's very plausible. The only thing that gives me heart is that this has been possible since the 1950s, and no one has yet done it. Maybe there is something redeemable in humanity after all.......

That may have as much to do with fear as anything. Almost everyone would be willing to classify such an act - dozens, hundreds or thousands of lives for profit - as the work of a pure sociopath. It's probably not going to happen until the death penalty is off the table, because prosecutors would argue for that and a jury would grant it.
