I'm not sure if I should be linking to other websites here, but I always thought russellstreetreport was a good Ravens source.

Interesting. That site links and article which says they broke off Montgomery because of Rice's horrible year. Despite the fact that Castillo's new offensive line schemes exactly correlate with a significant drop in performance from that unit. Good to be Harbaugh's friend, I guess.

AQ Shipley was a weak link in the line undersized and manhandled at times

They can have him. What amazes me is that with the Ravens' offense at a league trailing number 29 or so, that anyone would want him.
Please, please, please, please don't hire Norv Turner to replace him.

Manning has intangibles that can't be taught.

Phew, glad Caldwell is gone. The best thing he did for the Ravens was taking the shackles off of Joe during the playoffs last year. This year, his playcalling was terrible at times, and it showed that he wasn't an experienced coordinator. He just ran Cam's offense, and while you can't blame him for the poor execution, the inability to adjust at times, and the predictability was appalling.

Caldwell took the Colts to 1-15, got fired for it, and then was hired here. Cameron had taken the Dolphins to 1-15 before getting fired, and hired here. I get that some guys are good coordinators but bad head coaches, but still... with all the competition for one of 32 jobs in the world, and you can't do better than guys who have failed badly?
It will be interesting to see what Caldwell does in Detroit.

Norv Turner ruined the skins, why do we want this failure?

Norv Turner ruined the skins, why do we want this failure? Norv Turner didn't ruin the Redskins. Dan Snyder has set the tone for that organization. Norv Turner's claim to fame was the early 90s Dallas Cowboys as offensive coordinator under Jimmy Johnson. Of course, having Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin will make anyone look good. He managed to get the Cleveland Brown's offense good enough to be in about the middle of the pack in the NFL last season with who under center? Three throwaway quarterbacks. The rap on Turner is that he's Peter Principled as a head coach. Nobody has coached more games with a losing record than Turner. Turner is about the best OC available at this point. He has experience working with mid tier quarterbacks like Flacco. He might be able to make the pieces work together better, but I don't think his base offensive strategy is much different than that of Cam Cameron, whose schemes the Ravens have been running now for six years. I read the hot candidate is current wide receivers coach Jim Hostler. His offense at SF performed nearly as horribly as the Ravens did in 2013. He's also an insider, which suggests there won't be much change in the offense in 2014.

I do agree Short Danny is a cluster flock and does Washington no good. But Turner stunk as a coach IMO.
Can he make successful offenses?

I do agree Short Danny is a cluster flock and does Washington no good. But Turner stunk as a coach IMO. Can he make successful offenses? Let's see. 2013 - Cleveland Browns. 18th in total offense with three throwaway QBs. Fourth in AFC North with a 4-12 team record 2006 - San Francisco 49ers. 26th in total offense. Rookie Alex Smith under center. Third in NFC West with a 7-9 team record. 2003 - Miami Dolphins. 24th in total offense. Jay Fiedler, Brian Griese and some other name under center. Second in AFC East with a 10-6 team record. 2002 - Miami Dolphins. 15th in total offense. Jay Fiedler was the main man QB. Second in AFC East with a 9-7 team record. 2001 - San Diego Chargers. 11th in total offense. Doug Flutie was the QB with Drew Brees on the bench. Fourth in the AFC West with a 5-11 team record. 1993 - Dallas Cowboys. 4th in total offense. Troy Aikman under center. First in NFC East with a 12-4 team record and a Super Bowl win. 1992 - Dallas Cowboys. 4th in total offense. Troy Aikman under center. First in NFC East with a 13-3 team record and a Super Bowl win. 1991 - Dallas Cowboys. 9th in total offense. Troy Aikman and Steve Beuerlien share QB duties. Second in NFC East with a 11-5 team record. Almost anyone can win with Hall of Fame caliber players. Dallas had three that I can think of on the offensive side of the ball during Turner's time there as OC. With more pedestrian players, his record is spotty at best. There are no apparent Hall of Famers on Baltimore's roster. Turner is a disciple of Air Coryell, Cam Cameron was a QB coach under Turner at Washington. Jim Caldwell made but a few adjustments to the Cam Cameron system. Norv Turner doesn't stink as an OC. Several teams are looking at Norv Turner to improve their offenses besides Baltimore. I don't see what a Norv Turner could bring to Baltimore that isn't already here in Hostler. What the Baltimore brass needs to determine: is Air Coryell the best system for the players it has?

I don't believe Flacco is accurate enough for a chiefly or largely passing based offense, and I think this year showed that. It's true that with better o-line performance he might be more accurate. If they can fix the O-line, maybe.

As I believe I stated in another thread, Turner might be the best choice because he runs the Air Coryell offense, which is what the Ravens currently use. (I must say, however, that watching the Ravens on offense this year didn't exactly evoke images of Fouts and Winslow.) Although it might be interesting to see them start over and deploy a New England-type offense, I don't think their skill sets are best suited for it. The biggest priority for the Ravens should be helping Flacco rebound and Turner is probably the best choice to do so.
Turner didn't have much to work with this past season in Cleveland, but even with three nonentities under center, he managed to make both Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron into Pro Bowl caliber players.
Trouble is, I don't think Turner is officially available as of yet; he's still under contract to the Browns and his status likely won't be resolved until after the Super Bowl. Cleveland reportedly has their eyes on Denver OC Adam Gase for their head coaching job, and of course, he still has business to attend to with the Broncos. If hired, he'll likely want to hire his own staff, but in the meantime, Turner's status is on hold. Cleveland has stated that they intend to be liberal in granting permission to assistants seeking work elsewhere, but there's no guarantee they'd simply let Turner go to a division rival.
I agree with the above post that the Ravens may also simply look internally and promote receivers coach Jim Hostler to offensive coordinator. But there might be some concerns here as well. No one ever accused Ravens' receivers of running precise routs, and in Hostler's one stint as a coordinator with the Niners in 2007, they finished dead last in total yards and points scored. Not much of a baseline to start with.

If they can fix the O-line, maybe. Coming out of college, Flacco was an extremely accurate QB. His workouts with NFL scouts were the stuff of legend actually. No QB is going to have great accuracy when being chased around constantly, which has been an issue for the past couple of years with this Ravens line. Also, the AC kills completion percentages with the disproportionate number of long throws. What I see from Flacco isn't accuracy issues as much as it is timing, which has largely been disrupted by oncoming passrushers, and poor route running. When Flacco has had time, he's been able to carve defenses apart. Phil Sims and Jaws both have said that Flacco has to put the ball into tighter spaces than any QB in the NFL.

Joe is very accurate and strong, Im just sick of the swiss cheese line that is supposed to protect him. Look at other QB's , they could sit in a lawnchair eating a sandwich untouched throwing the ball.

Tom Brady got sacked almost as often than did Flacco in 2013 and didn't have the receivers that Flacco did.

Most quarterbacks were very accurate in college. Terry Bradshaw once said the biggest regret of his career was that he never threw the ball as well in the pros as he did in college.
Ron Jaworski also ranked Flacco over Drew Brees, which should signal that his ratings might be a tad suspect. I'm not saying Flacco's a dog, but better than Drew Brees? Please. And while I like Phil Simms, he tends to gush over whichever quarterbacks he's covering that particular week. No one can put a sheen on the ordinary like Phil Simms.
Part of Flacco's accuracy issues may be due to the offense since the Cam Cameron (which is essentially what they ran this year) system favors low efficiency and high risk with deeper throws. That's naturally going to cut down on completion percentages. Few quarterbacks can throw a deep ball like Flacco (except maybe Brees), but he has issues with the shorter ones, sometimes looking out of sync with receivers he should be keenly familiar with.
Couple the above with the fact that the Ravens receivers aren't exactly razor-sharp in their routes, and that's why I think it's better for the Ravens to stick with Air Coryell. Yes, it puts more pressure on what has been a mediocre offensive line because they have to hold their blocks longer, and yes, its so-called "tree routes" are somewhat obsolete in today's game, and finally, it's probably the worst possible system for a no-huddle offense. (Whew!) But even still, I'd have to say that it's still the best system for the personnel the Ravens have. What the Ravens have to fix, however, in order for it to work is the running game, since Air Coryell is largely predicated on running first.
I don't think the run-first philosophy is particularly suited to Flacco, since he's more of a rhythm quarterback. He needs a steady diet of passing in order to be effective.

That mediocre offensive line will look vastly different next year I suspect. Monroe and Yanda will be the only ones left from the unit that played much of the season.

Having Osemele healthy could make a big difference as well. Back surgery is always a bit of a dicey proposition, but the injury was clearly limiting his mobility this past season. He'll only be 25 by the beginning of next season, so hopefully he'll be able to return to form. AQ Shipley looked overmatched at times.

Looks like Norv Turner will be the Vikings new offensive coordinator. I guess he just likes driving cars with flat tires.

I think the Kubiak hire is going to prove to be a good one. Can't say much one way or the other about Denison because, honestly, I don't know a thing about him.
