What If Earth Was Threatened by An Asteroid Strike? Astronaut Panel Brings Up Ideas To Search, Deflect These Threats “If we get hit 20 years from now, that’s not bad luck. That’s stupidity.”That’s what former NASA astronaut Ed Lu has to say about asteroids and our efforts to search for them. He delivered those comments at a panel discussion today at New York’s American Museum of Natural History. He and several other astronauts spoke on behalf of the Association of Space Explorers (which, as the name implies, consists of astronauts, cosmonauts and the like.) We guess that as astute readers of our publication, you know that a planetary threat from asteroids (and comets) exists. And there’s certainly more we can do; when that 17-meter asteroid blasted Russia earlier this year, Lu said most space agencies learned about it from social media! www.universetoday.com/105757/what-if-earth-was-under-attack-by-an-asteroid-astronaut-panel-brings-up-ideas-to-search-deflect-these-threats/

It's a real, serious threat. We need to get off this rock..and build a real deflection system.

An asteroid deflection system is beyond present technology, and too expensive in the current economy.

An asteroid deflection system is beyond present technology, and too expensive in the current economy. Possibly....but research is not. And alternate plans--- seed banks are already in place. Shelters, evac routes, contingency plans...all can be worked on, and need to be if Katrina is any example. Unlike dinosaurs, we can plan, and part of humanity's strength is its adaptation of simple tech to survive everywhere, from Eskimos to Bushmen...even Washington, DC. And we may only need to slightly alter course.... a few nukes in the right place, or some sort of rocket, could do the trick...

Nukes are also handy with Martians and other nasty aliens.

There are many deflection technologies that have been designed, we just need to build something soon and test it on a non threat, before it's to late.

A real nuclear deterrent: US, Russia may team up to use weapons against asteroids Oct 2013 When geophysicist H. Jay Melosh attended a meeting of U.S. and ex-Soviet nuclear weapons designers in May 1995, he was surprised by how eager the Cold Warriors were to work together against an unlikely but dangerous extraterrestrial threat: asteroids on a collision course with Earth. After Edward Teller, father of the hydrogen bomb, urged others meeting at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to consider building and orbiting huge, new nuclear weapons for planetary protection, some top Russian weaponeers lent their support. Ever since, he has been pushing back against scientists who still support the nuclear option, arguing that a non-nuclear solution – diverting asteroids by hitting them with battering rams -- is both possible and far less dangerous. In real life, Bong Wie, the director of Iowa State University, says he has a three-year, $600,000 grant from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to design a “hypervelocity nuclear interceptor system,” basically an ICBM-borne warhead fitted with a battering ram. The ram would separate from the bomb before impact, gouging a crater in the asteroid so the bomb could then blast it to bits. Keith Holsapple, an engineering professor at the University of Washington, meanwhile says NASA has given him a five-year, $1.25 million research grant to study how either an impact device or a nuclear explosion could deflect an Earth-bound asteroid from its path. investigations.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/10/16/20979593-a-real-nuclear-deterrent-us-russia-may-team-up-to-use-weapons-against-asteroids?lite
