Who do you like to win it all? Will the USA make out their group and advance? Thoughts? Bald Eagle you out there for some football talk?

I can't see past Brazil or Argentina to win it quite honestly. The venues and conditions strongly favor the Latin American sides. Of the Europeans the best chances will be 1. Spain and 2. Germany. I think both the USA and England will struggle to qualify from their groups.

Good points baldeagle. My son picked Argentina before qualifying was completed. I am going with Germany.

The USA obviously have some huge challenges ahead of them but I am giving them more of a chance than most it isn't being a homer. Anxious to see what the coach has done with this squad.

A great start for the USA beating Ghana 2-1. With Germany hammering Portugal 4-0 in the same group, the USA will not get a better chance of qualifying than this.

Both sides had some good chances. USA converted theirs. Great win for the USA. I expected the Germans to win but not in such a lopsided fashion. Not a big Ronaldo fan.

I don't know much about soccer and don't like sports but I have been watching because all those buff men are running around in those little shorts. I watched the French and the Swiss men running around today and I don't know who won the game but oh la la.

The United States can still advance with a win against Germany or a draw in the Portugal-Ghana match should they lose against the Germans. At least, I think those are the necessary scenarios for the U.S. to advance to the knockout round.

A draw for the US will almost certainly be enough to qualify through the group stage, based on what I've seen so far that should be very achievable.

Leave it to soccer to have tie games in a championship tournament.

Leave it to soccer to have tie games in a championship tournament. Ties are worth a point and will decide many of the qualifiers. Of course in the last 16 there will be no ties, only winners through to the final.

But it'll be fine if the USA wins the final by penalty kicks (after extra time has been played)?

But it'll be fine if the USA wins the final by penalty kicks (after extra time has been played)? Not really. As I recall, the US women's team won that way some years ago. They were offsides, or something like that, on the winning kick and it was not called. I actually hope the USA never wins a World Cup because I would rather we focus on more exciting sports like the NFL, MLB and watching paint dry.

The USA could not finish their chances and shoul dhave gotten out of there with a 4-2 win. On the the other end, if you are going to defend do it in the opponents back third or at least in their half.
A team cannot continue to defend and absorb shots with a reasonable expectation of a good outcome. They needed to clear long or at least clear, get out,and hold possession.
However, soccer is a fickle event. USA were outplayed by Ghana but got the win, and outplayed Portugal and ended up with a draw.

Argentina/Switzerland followed by USA/ Belgium. Argentina had better not snooze for even a brief moment. USA has a tough match ahead of them today. Some players sitting this one out for Belgium may help the USA chances though.

Wow! I've just seen the best game of the world cup so far. Superb game, end to end stuff, no flopping (diving), few fouls, pure sportsmanship 100% effort by both sides. It's a shame that one side had to lose. Well done USA and Belgium, great stuff!

Howard put on quite a performance. And as much as the USA was out played they still had enough chances to win. The first goal by Belgium was a thing of beauty on the pitch. Perfect shot. The best side won today in that match. Congrats to Belguim.
