Anyone ever had knee replacement surgery? Im having mine done in March. I seriously injured my knee when I was 12yrs old and had major recostructive surgery. I have screws and staples holding my knee together. 20yrs ago the surgeon told me I needed a replacement but I was too young. Im in constant pain now and have had 3 cortisone shots in my knee in the last year abdsaw my surgeon today and told him I cant wait any longer. He agreed after seeing Xray. Said im in the hospital 2-3 days. Have at home PT for 2 weeks then PT 4-6 weeks after. I hear its very painful. I have some pain meds now that I take when pain is extremely bad, but im very careful not to abuse them. I have had the same RX for Oxy for over a year now.

Most people who have them are amazed at how much better they feel afterwards. It's most important to follow up with any PT that's ordered for you. I haven't heard that this kind of surgery is very painful, as heart surgery is said to be.

My sister had both done at same time, and was much happier and pain free in a short time.
She did exercise ahead of time to be as strong as possible.
AND you will be off the oxy after a short time AND that is a good thing.

A friend of my mother's had them both done at the same time. That turned out to be a mistake for him, but I must state that he had co-morbidities (Parkinson's disease and old age) that affected his ability to heal. His inability to move proved the beginning of his end.

Best of luck to you biteme!! It's a good thing you have lost weight, I'm sure that will help with your PT and recovery time. As EY already said... do the PT faithfully, I believe that is key to any recovery.

How would I know if im addicted to my pain pills? If you are concerned about that possibility, speak to your doctor. He can tell you, or put you in touch with someone who can.

When I expressed my concern to my doctor about becoming addicted/dependant on my pain killers he said, "what difference does it make? You'll be on them for the rest of your life anyway, just don't abuse them". That was ~15 years ago. These days I take them as and when I need them, some times I can go 4-5 days without, other times I take 2-3 doses a day. I always avoid such high doses for 2-3 consecutive days because constipation can then become a serious problem. 'Physician heal thyself', just take care.

I always avoid such high doses for 2-3 consecutive days because constipation can then become a serious problem. 'Physician heal thyself', just take care. This occurs because the gut contains some of the same receptors that the brain contains. Therefore, such drugs affect both. This is why doctors check when patients defecate after surgery, it is a good test of when their body has cleared the anesthetic. There are now medications that can help people with opiate-related constipation, but they have their own set of side-effects.

Had surgery Monday. Surgery went well. Still in hospital. Pain can get pretty bad at time. I get Tylenol every 4 hrs. Oxycotin when requested every 3hrs and Daulidid when requested. Hoping to go home Wednesday afternoon. Using the walker pretty good.

Got 54 staples removed today. I have 3 more at home PT visits then will go to a PT. Only have 90 degrees of flexibility but I gain a little more each day. Pain is lessing and using less pain pills is always a good thing. Saw Dr today he is pleased with my progress and said im using the walker well. Hoping to get to use a cane soon instead. Probably gonna be a while before I can drive since its my right knee

Opioid pain meds can cause constipation. If it gets severe there are medications for it.

Its been 6 days. Im not confessing that to any Dr or nurse. I would, that's too long, you require prompt if not urgent medication.

That's... a little longer than is healthy. How serious that interval is depends on your "regular" schedule and what you've eaten. I understand the reluctance to speak to a doctor; I don't like doing it. But I recommend it; you'd enjoy a bowel disimpaction even less. That procedure must be done by a medical professional.

Its been 6 days. Im not confessing that to any Dr or nurse. One more reason I hate pain meds.
Call your Doc right away and tell them how long it's been. They can get you the meds for the relief you need. Make sure you tell them if you have already tried any over the counter stuff. Don't mess around with this, it can really cause serious medical issues.
This aside, your recovery seems to be coming along well, that's great news.
