At 91, of old age, in Idaho. Folks may remember him as Hardline, one of the convicts in the "rebel against authority" film Cool Hand Luke, perhaps most famous for the utterance of the sadistic chain-gang Captain played by Strother Martin: "Whut we have heah... is failuh... to commun'cate." The film is well worth watching if you haven't seen it. He also played Captain Ed Hocken, opposite Leslie Neilsen's Lieutenant Frank Drebbin, on Police Squad, a pun-driven policy procedural comedy from the same twisted minds that answered the "Airport" disaster movie craze with a send-up "Airplane!" (itself almost a scene for scene remake of the little known "Zero Hour!"). Kennedy starred in "Airport", the film which got that whole genre rolling.

Versatile actor.
He could play a good guy – Airport, The Dirty Dozen
Or He could play a bad guy – Charade, Cahill U.S. Marshal
I enjoyed all his work.
R.I.P.
