Of cancer, early this morning, at age 82. He is the father of Rex and Rob, built legendary defenses in Chicago and Philadelphia, and was censured for putting a bounty on Dallas Cowboys players long before Sean Payton's organization did it. He also took a swing at one of his own assistants during a sideline disagreement. Famously said that "the only thing the prevent defense prevents is you from winning the game". Rest in peace.

He was the Jets' defensive line coach (they didn't call them coordinators back then) when they beat the Colts in Super Bowl III.
I always thought Ryan was great as a coordinator, but probably a tad overrated as a head coach. At times he could be too combative for his own good and I think the qualities which served him well as an assistant probably hurt him somewhat when he was in charge.
