Pass rush didn't look good. Rush defense didn't look good. But at this point, neither Trestman nor Pees is teaching or using their best stuff, as there will soon be cuts and some of those men will be hired elsewhere. Last year the lack of depth was painfully apparent in the pre-season; what happened when starters got hurt should have surprised no one. This year, that seems less of an issue.

Just the opposite, talking with many others today. Defense looked damn good

The defense gave up two sustained drives to the Colts when Luck was in there. Like last year, they had trouble getting off the field on third down, which explains why the two drives consumed over 11 minutes of playing time.

The take away showed me good potential

The take away showed me good potential You mean the McClellan/Weddle strip and recovery? A nice play, but one play. It does not make up for a rather porous run defense early. I am not saying they're going to be horrible. We don't know whether they'll be good or not, yet. I am saying that series of plays indicates more work is needed. And, of course, as I also said, Pees isn't going to share his A-list stuff with guys who will shortly be cut, and some of whom will be working in other cities.

Weddle and Webb have looked good back in the secondary thus far. The cornerback play, however, has been problematic the first two games.

That might be okay if they'd brought in a pass rusher, but they did not do that, either. I would guess they are trying to make a team that can score a lot of points, and are willing to give up points as long as they give up (of course) fewer than they score. Given rule changes designed to promote scoring by making downfield pass defense difficult, this is probably a wise strategy. Time will tell if it works.

Given rule changes designed to promote scoring by making downfield pass defense difficult, this is probably a wise strategy. Time will tell if it works. The Ravens reportedly tried to make a deal with Dallas to move up two spots in the draft to take Florida State cornerback Jalen Ramsey, but Dallas wouldn't bite on the offer of the Ravens' first-round pick (two slots later) and one of their fourth-round picks. This is a draft where the Ravens were truly drafting from need rather than simply best player available. They could have had DeForest Buckner, a defensive end from Oregon who went one pick later to the Niners, but they also had a glaring hole at left tackle and opted for Ronnie Stanley, whose early returns have been positive thus far. What is worrisome about the Ravens this year is that they are relying on a number of older veterans returning from injury, particularly Suggs and Dumervil. They're not spring chickens by NFL standards, and it probably isn't realistic to expect them to combine for 29 sacks as they did in 2014.
