The State of MD should send the Shock Trauma bill to the BPD. They could have driven him a couple of blocks to Medstar Health on Hanover St. instead of Shock Trauma for 1/50 th the cost.

1) What an idiot. Probably concerned about the ball-breaking he will get from his fellow officers. Bogus marksmanship certificates showing up on his desk and suchlike.
2) Shock trauma is an expensive facility so it likes to be busy. People often get routed there when they don't need that level of care. That said, it can be difficult for someone in the field who is not trained in trauma medicine or has some experience to determine what's serious and what isn't. People who look fine, are talking and lucid, can decompensate very quickly.
3) The BPD does pay for the care of its officers. All police departments do. What you meant is that THEY should send HIM the bill. However, it would never be paid; a serious gunshot wound with surgery will generate a middle five figure bill. (That's what insurance is properly for - not little Jimmy and his sniffles. That's why deductibles have to be high or the system fails.)

However, it would never be paid; a serious gunshot wound with surgery will generate a middle five figure bill. (That's what insurance is properly for - not little Jimmy and his sniffles.
