Orioles tendered contracts to: Chris Tillman, Zach Britton, Manny Machado, Brad Brach, Jonathan Schoop, Kevin Gausman, Caleb Joseph, Ryan Flaherty and T. J. McFarland. That last is somewhat hard to understand, given that he pitches the same way South Park impersonates celebrity voices. Not tendered was Vance Worley. His problem was you never knew if you were going to get Vance or Joanne when he came out. They picked up Logan Verrett from the Mets who will probably step into the role. Article

Orioles said to be interested in catcher Welington Castillo. But I wonder if it's real. He doesn't have a towering number of home runs, and that's the beginning and end of Duquette's offensive strategy. In 2016 he was .264 / .322 / .423. Article

more of the same from Dumpster Dan. This is a borderline playoff team (w/ Buck managing) & that seems to be the objective. One year in, one year out. This year is an out. It beats finishing in the cellar every year, but... My assumption is that DD has no intention of working for PA after his contract is up in 2018, so the long term health of the farm system isn't much of a concern for him as he won't be here. On a side note, I love the name Welington. Google reports his nickname is "beef".

If Buck wasn't the manager he is, this team would be competing with the post-Maddon Rays for the cellar spot. Buck has said he intends to finish his career here, so if the O's don't offer him a new contract he expects to retire. But what he ought to do is what Maddon did: find a team that's close (like the Orioles many years) but whose owners want to succeed (which appears not to be the case here). Buck appears to have a weakness as regards understanding pitching development (based on the fact that he failed to detect Adair's incompetence for so long), but even with that he's good enough to take a team to the World Series if he's backed by an organization committed to that.
Angelos screwed Duquette out of that Toronto promotion. That's not the kind of thing that encourages loyalty. My guess is as soon as his contract is up, he'll walk. But there are only 30 such jobs in the country, and Duquette was on the shelf for a decade before he was hired here. So maybe he will stay - if Angelos wants him to. I doubt he'll be in much demand. He's done some good things and he's done some bad things, and the Orioles have never gone deep into the postseason under his tenure. There's nothing on his resume that's going to make other teams grab him, I believe.
