www.nationalreview.com/2018/05/chinese-prom-dress-cultural-appropriation-controversy/A few weeks ago, a young woman in Utah saw a Chinese-style dress that she fell in love with, and wore to her prom. After she posted pictures on Facebook, she was viciously attacked by a group of cultural imperialists who insisted that everyone who is not a member of their race and culture be prohibited from embracing said culture in the US.

You make it sound like it's the Chinese who are against her, RJ. However, I'd guess that most of the criticism is coming from her neighbors -- people from Utah, people from red states, conservatives, nationalists, white nationalists. Most Chinese have no problem with her wearing this dress. Personally, I think it looks quite nice on her.

The guy who started this nonsense is called Jeremy Lam and his statement was "My culture is NOT your prom dress!" And it was immediately followed up with cries of "cultural appropriation!" It's true that Chinese people in China were fine with this. It's only the idiot social justice warriors here.

I agree with the essayist.
I do hope the complainers have a cultural "right" to complain in English-- or on a computer. Perhaps they should check their ethnic backgrounds to see if they're permitted to ride in automobiles, view movies, read by electric lights, shower in hot water, listen to rock'n'roll (or Beethoven), wear blue jeans et al...
The whole point of "diversity" is so cultures CAN borrow and assimilate. Vibrant, innovative cultures occur where there is cross-cultural "pollination". That doesn't happen in land-locked mountain villages, where everyone lives exactly as their great-great-grandparents did.
Cultures that borrow and assimilate thrive. Cultures that turn their backs on the rest of the world stagnate.
This Jeremy Lam is free to behave as he chooses, of course... but he damn-shure better never eat a slice of pizza! (Or go to a prom, either.)

I guess someone has to say outrageous things to keep the board going.

Mexicans and South Americans are "white nationalist" groups? That's who is apparently attacking her. Because of "cultural appropriation". Of course, since they are attacking her in English, they are also guilty of "cultural appropriation". If they are using indoor plumbing, they are guilty of "cultural appropriation" since that was invented by a "white guy". Same with the clothes they are wearing, since they were all 'invented' or made by whites. The Chinese have actually approved her wearing of the dress.
