Another one that brings tears to my eyes America the Beautiful especially when it is sung at Mass. OK...I hope no one thinks I am trying to stir the s&^%t with this one, cuz that is not my intention. Here goes..... I rise gladly and proudly, doff my cap and hold it over my heart, and sing along at a ball game when our national Anthem is played. (I also cringe, bow my head in shame and turn away in disgust when morons yell "O!!! towards the end, but that is a subject for another thread...) But I do NOT rise for "God Bless America". I find it a crappy, formulaic and moronic song that could serve nearly any nation, as long as you could substitute the geographic features and the nations name. (True, that Irish tenor singer from NY did a great job singing it, but that cuts no ice with me at the end of the day) More importantly, IT IS NOT MY NATIONS NATIONAL ANTHEM. Therefore, I do not, nor will I, stand up and uncover for it. And that thing they do about "please join us in honoring our nations military by standing up" for this lame peice of claptrap is just bulls&^%t. Our military deserves a better song than that. Like, I don't know...The Star-Spangled Banner? Frankly, the Anthem at the beginning of the game gives everyone their chance to join together as Americans. The second time is overkill.

The war of 1812 ? That was a bad and useless war.... Again! Let's celebrate and steal the melody from.... England! Lol The war was fought because George III could not let it go that this little insignificant colony wiggled out of his grasp. Face the truth, your ancestors would not have come here if that war was not fought. They could have stayed under the thumb of the monarch of their own country and lived in poverty or fear for their lives because of religious beliefs there. I guess I missed the history lesson that covered all of the people who fled to England for sanctuary (insert monstrous eye-roll here). FSK wrote a poem, which when published, the public wanted made into a song. Key gave the poem to his brother-in-law, Judge Joseph H. Nicholson, who saw that the words fit the popular melody "The Anacreontic Song". It was common, before copyright laws, for melodies to be used for many different songs. Have the British knocked on our door demanding the rights back to The Star Spangled Banner, or My Country, "Tis Of Thee amongst many others? Doesn't seem to bother them, so why let it bother you? You don't like the song, we get it. Maybe it's time to do yourself a favor- buy a pair of earplugs, yank up your big boy pants, and get on with your life. But then that might deprive you of your daily dose of controversy . Yikes, this makes it my 3 cents worth, time to stop before I break the bank.

I agree with you on that, but as you said...another time, another place. God Bless America is a pretty song, and while it has it's place, it is not and will never be a fill-in for our national anthem. That said, I do respect that there are people that tie it to an event that had an impact on their life.

I merely pointed out it wasn't an original melody he wrote. Thanks for the rest of the lecture.

It's an awful song. Old and archaic. Let's get a new one. I'm sure that will happen in twenty or thirty years, when the country falls. Who would write a song about a failing country? Maybe a good blues?

I believe the terms you used were "bad and useless war", and "steal" - I just wanted to clarify those points for you. Peace, Bro, I have total faith you will live to fight another day!

But maybe I am against all wars. That's why sometimes you have to dig deeper than what you get on the Internet. Plus I am limited to my iPhone. Hard to type deep and meaningful thoughts here sometimes.

It was my mistake to criticize something from the musical standpoint. It is obviously emotionally attached to others.

America the Beautiful was sung at mass by the youth group. I was unable to continue singing when it got to the third verse. I could not keep the lump out of my throat.

I love all the hymns that celebrate the United States. When sung at church I simply lose it.
