The Orioles have had five quality starts this year. They have Tillman, and after him no one who'd be a #2 anywhere else. Most of them would be struggling to be a #3. This is going to crush the bullpen before May is over. They made one "upgrade" at pitcher, Ubaldo, who is another dud so far. Gausman and Bundy may eventually amount to something, it's hard to say for sure.
This is going to be a long year.

As I stated on another thread, I think we're going to see Gausman in Baltimore sooner rather than later.

This year's team so far is a lot like last year's. No real lead off hitter. Starting pitching is going to leave the BP running on fumes by the All Star break. They can score runs in bunches or not at all. They don't have a solid closer. They need manny to solidify the defense. Way too early, but they still look like a .500 team.
Weiters is hitting like a new man & Cruz & his PEDs are a good pick up so far. Maybe some young arms will turn the tide down the road.

Davis strained his oblique last night. That will put him on the DL for a good while. Hope it is a mild one.

Chen was down with that for a good part of last year, IIRC. It's probably a worse injury for a pitcher than a position player, but the fact they recalled Weeks and sent McFarland back sort of suggests the DL is in his future.

up to 9 QSs now. Dead last in MLB. Need to improve that or else.

It's a recurring pattern. When the pitching starts producing quality starts the bats go dead. I really think, based on some of the at bats I've seen, that they need a new hitting coach.

Gausman and Bundy cannot get here quick enough, although Britton looks like he has finally turned the corner. Jimenez has quality stuff, but it is not surprising that he is so inconsistent with that delivery.

I think Miguel Gonzalez's days in the rotation may be numbered. He'll alternately pitch good innings with equally awful ones.

I think Miguel Gonzalez's days in the rotation may be numbered. He'll alternately pitch good innings with equally awful ones. Yeah. I really pull for him, but he reminds me of the pitchers that they have had to rely on for so long, hoping to catch lightning in a bottle from the Mexican league (Rodrigo Lopez), etc. It's great he's done as well as he has, but probably unfair to expect him to be more than that long reliever/spot starter guy long term.

As soon as anyone is available, I'd expect Gonzalez would be the man to go. Except for acquiring Jimenez, on whose tenure here the jury remains out, they made no significant upgrades in the off season, so it really shouldn't surprise me that pitching is a problem. I just wish all the slumping hitters could break out of it. One or two at a time is expected. Seems like the O's have one or two guys hitting consistently at a time.

Nice job by Tillman tonight. A few more of those complete-game shutouts would be just what the doctor ordered.

a complete game. Awesome!
Os are still tied for dead last in quality starts (14) with 4 other teams. One of them is the Rays, but they've had really bad luck w/ injuries this season.
I can't get too enthused about the prospects for the season when I know the bullpen can't carry this load forever. Still it's more enjoyable to cheer for a .500 club than a .400 one.

They've drafted a bunch of guys high, and quite a few haven't panned out. Arrieta, Matusz and Britton come to mind. There remain big question marks next to Gausman and Bundy at this point. Is this normal? Do they make poor talent choices? Or is there something wrong with the farm system as regards training them?

A good outing by Norris was squandered tonight. Cripes, the Orioles were eight outs away from being on the wrong end of a perfect game.
