I thought I'd throw this up, as this update just came out recently. For those of you with windows 8, this is a free upgrade and I might add, well worth doing. The new 8.1 is a much smoother and faster operating system. It does give you the start button back, but nit the "start menu" and I think that is probably what most people are thinking or looking for. Once you get used to it, you're fine. You need to right click on it to shut down, restart, etc. Also, to get to say "my computer" that would be under "file explorer" etc. Control panel is on the list, with a few other things you may recognize. Apps are much easier to fine. There is an arrow at the bottom of the page, just click that, or swipe it, depending if you have a touch screen or not. You can also boot to your homepage, or just have your homepage as one of your tiles and go back and forth. This new system is really starting to grow on me now that I've used it for awhile. I think the huge change was just too much for many folks. That and the start button being gone, etc. Anyway, if you have Windows 8, do the upgrade to 8.1, I think you'll like it. If you have a slower connection, go do something, as it will be awhile. It's a 3.2GB download. Enjoy and if you have any question, let me know and I will try and assist you..

I haven't seen 8.1 yet, but as an IT Tech, I have to say Windows 8 is a mess.

IMO, as a developer and power user, the big mistake they made was changing the UI without a good reason to do so. I understand why they want to standardize the UI and why they'd want to pick the mobile device UI, but don't agree with the move. They really should have left the old UI in as an alternative for those who don't like the new one. Microsoft isn't the only developer guilty of arrogance towards its user base (demonstrated by making changes without consulting the community), but as they are a big software supplier, their examples are among the most egregious.

I stopped looking at Windows 8 in a negative light. It's here to stay, so we may as well learn the system and adapt. I have done that and 8.1 has without a doubt made it better. The more I use and learn it, the more I like it..

I only left XP when my main photo software (not Photoshop) upgraded to 64 bit. Win 7 handles it nicely Thank you So I don't care what Win 8 can/can't do.

XP's shelf life is just about over. Support ends in April.. I hope this means an upgrade....our network is worse than molasses on a cold day. They tried to blame folks streaming and such--but heck you can't even load e-mails---internet radio would crash the whole computer!! And our computers have no sound cards-- we can't even listen to the mandatory online trainings, let alone stream music and video. We just have to fake the tests- government efficiency- and those suckers take FOREVER to download even as simple slide shows.Must folks just jump on their phones, which are about a thousand times faster.

Windows 8 has been an utter and complete disaster (unfortunately it is what came with my Lenovo Ideapad Yoga 13).

I generally do not upgrade my operating system. There's rarely a reason to, and many reasons not to. Whatever is available when I build is what I put on there. I did buy an extra copy of XP in case Vista wasn't done before I wanted new iron - I knew Vista was awful and did not want it. I may buy an extra copy of Windows 7, because I don't like 8/8.1. And if history is a guide, 9 will be much better. They seem to get it right in Redmond about one time in two.

with 8.1 you can boot directly into desktop mode instead of the tile-based app user interface
