The last major leaguer to win at least 25 games (27-6 in 1990 with the A's) was found dead late Monday at his Southern California home in Seal Beach. No official cause of death has been released. Welch is probably best remembered for his epic duel with the Yankees' Reggie Jackson in Game 2 of the 1978 World Series. The rookie struck out Mr. October with two on in the top of the ninth to seal the Dodgers' win. Unfortunately, Welch also battled alcoholism early in his career and wound up in rehab. His five books chronicle his struggles with his addiction. Welch's 137 wins during the 1980s was third among major league pitchers for that decade, trailing only Jack Morris and Dave Stieb. His 27 wins in 1990 were the most since Steve Carlton also won 27 for the 1972 Phillies. The last pitcher to post more wins in a season was Denny McLain, who won 31 for the Tigers in 1968. R.I.P.
