tech.fortune.cnn.com/2013/11/11/life-changes-be-ready/The writer spent an amusing amount of time gnashing his teeth in print, since he showed up at this event and found a bunch of normal folks, instead of the knuckle-dragging rednecks he had hoped and planned for. This meant he had to go back to the hotel room and re-write his entire article, so I guess I can't blame him.

I've been ready for the last twenty years. Me and my wife could be mobile and ready in a half a day. We have all the survival equipment AND skills. I feel bad for more urban folk if the stuff hit the fan.

I feel bad for more urban folk if the stuff hit the fan. So your plan is to hit the road when the shlt hits the fan. Good luck with all the others with the same plan. I have stocked up a couple of years worth of food, ammo, guns, solar, artesian water, green house, seeds, 1000 gallons of propane, 700 of diesel. I am off grid, and pretty isolated with good neighbors who will work as a community . I still figure that I will only last 3 months longer than the other shlubs out there.

I"m all for stocking up for short-term emergency supplies- food, water purifiers, medicines, ammo. Katrina lessons and all. Long-term civ collapse- we're screwed. Planning and prep- will always give one a leg up. But just dumb luck will play a part- where are you when the bombs go off? What is your current medical condition? Were your supplies hit in the storm or irradiated? If not- were they rendered inaccessible? You can sink a fortune into prepping, and still be hit by something that blows out your plans. I like to balance expense with realistic chances-- a grid loss of a week or two, riding it out. Total civ collapse- death is most realistic outcome for most, no matter how well prepped, unless you sink a small fortune into your plans.

Here's a good example of how I think about it-- got to get a root canal done- my tooth started hurting last week, got x-rays and such, seeing oral surgeon today. Now, if this happened shortly before and after a collapse-- no matter how well stocked and prepped my shelter and supplies were, unless I had the forethought to install a dental clinic, and had someone skilled to perform basic dental surgery-- I'd be screwed!! Death by tooth decay when antibiotics run out. 100 to 200 grand on ultimate shelter and supplies blown out by bum tooth.

Funny how things change, how quickly they do, and more than that, how quickly we forget. Tooth and gum issues were a top vector for infection and disease and, before antibiotics, this killed a LOT of people. Nowadays, we go to the dentist for our comfort and to keep our teeth looking good.

And I'm sure your mobility will not be hampered by the thousands of other folks on the highways trying to execute their well thought out plans too.

On the subject of prepping there is one aspect overlooked, security. People who really want to prepare for a disaster do so and do not tell others about it.

Gaia's ichthyic children are NOT for eating! Does that mean no more smoked grunion? 'Nein! Nyet!' It is Earthmurder and cannibalism (as it is eating another child of the Earth Mother)! The process of catching said children of the Earth exudes carbon and smoking their carcasses... well just stick a sword in the Earth Mother while you are at it.

Think of having to live off the land with all the other gun toting alaskans, no more imports, no more electricity, you can finally be lowering your carbon footprint, oh wait no you won't you will be burning wood to stay alive. I wonder how long scurvy takes.
