Does that mean no more smoked grunion? 'Nein! Nyet!' It is Earthmurder and cannibalism (as it is eating another child of the Earth Mother)! The process of catching said children of the Earth exudes carbon and smoking their carcasses... well just stick a sword in the Earth Mother while you are at it. Neither Dagon nor Cthulu will long tolerate the slaughter of their spawn....Gaia be damned, but another plaything to the indifferent universe-- but to cross the Elder Gods and their servants will bring the greatest of all horrors-- their attention!! Don't disturb their fhtagn- or you're fhucked!!

Here's a good example of how I think about it-- got to get a root canal done- my tooth started hurting last week, got x-rays and such, seeing oral surgeon today. Now, if this happened shortly before and after a collapse-- no matter how well stocked and prepped my shelter and supplies were, unless I had the forethought to install a dental clinic, and had someone skilled to perform basic dental surgery-- I'd be screwed!! Death by tooth decay when antibiotics run out. 100 to 200 grand on ultimate shelter and supplies blown out by bum tooth. Funny how things change, how quickly they do, and more than that, how quickly we forget. Tooth and gum issues were a top vector for infection and disease and, before antibiotics, this killed a LOT of people. Nowadays, we go to the dentist for our comfort and to keep our teeth looking good. Root canal seems to be a success! Other than soreness from needles- they had to shoot me up like 6-7 times with big ass needles-- I must have tough gums, took a lot to numb them! But the real pain is gone!! Woo hooo!! Odd place I was sent to-- only does root canals, period- and they have a 50s rock theme!! Strange strange strange... But to your point--for those that survive in shelters, and can stay hidden from or hold off looters-- good old disease will takes its toll. Trauma kits go for a reasonable price on Good Stuff Cheap for that reason. But you need some skill and precision, too. Looting of drug stores will be HUGE--- and if civ really collapses, once those drugs run out and/or expire, well you better be up on your herbals and hope they're around-- there's a reason why average life expectancy was age 30 for a long, long time.

The attention of the Elder Gods is indeed as to horror as the benthic beast, covered in feline excreta and the regurgitate and solidus excretions of partially digested integumentary organs of a certain avian variant, is to comedy (at its own expense). A mere shadow over Innsmoth is sufficient to blast the sanity of mere mortals, leaving in its wake a tittering, gibbering and chittering mass with only passing resemblance to humanity. Should Dagon arise, those that harmed the ichthyic children will curse the wombs of their forebearers for having born their lineage into existence.

Of course the weak will cull the strong so it isn't enough to prep for the crash, you as you said have to also be lucky enough to live in an area which will recover. Alaska seems a bit remote, with a short growing season so only the hardy few will survive there over the long haul. Of course we probably will only have a short disruption, then the cities will be the main death traps.

Prepping is a fun hobby that helps the economy by having people spend money on things that are mainly made in america, dried food etc. The Mormons have practiced it since their beginning, and it hasn't harmed them. Think of the ant, and the grasshopper story, but without the ant getting a free ride at the end. If there is no crash then it has all been a fun game of make believe.

It's all about cost vs benefit ration. If you can afford it-- go all the way!! If not, plan for what is practical and in your budget. While its prudent to plan for tomorrow, you also have to live for today. I have a few basics- my plan is more for natural disaster that will shut down roads and access for a week or two. Some food, water filtration, ammo, guns, fire starter, warm clothing, basic first aid, extra medicines, radio, hand crank lights and such. If it's worse- we'll have to link up with others- or die. As it will end up for most folks in urban/suburban areas, sad to say- but true.

Many adults did live to an older age- but only the hardiest! Wonder what we're doing to our gene pool..... Alaska- whoever is up there better be prepped and skilled in going total Eskimo. A big help in more accessible areas will be looting. I call it "Home Depot syndrome" - seems like no matter how well you planned and prepped, something always pops up in the middle of a project and you're like, "Damn! Gotta run out again to Home Depot!!".

On the subject of prepping there is one aspect overlooked, security. People who really want to prepare for a disaster do so and do not tell others about it. I don't think anonymous forums count as telling others. Going on TV is pretty dumb though. Agreed.

It can also be fun to plan for a disaster (strange as that sounds), it can relieve stress by thinking that you have done what you could. There are of course people who go overboard, I might be one of those, but I can afford it, and am having fun. I plan, and build all the things I think I will need. I installed the solar electric myself with the help of "Solar for Dummies", and am in the process of installing my solar hot water underfloor heating system with just google as my friend (I hate chopping wood). Great fun!

Just look at CO in late Aug and early Sep. Several towns there were cut off completely from the rest of the world. No power, all roads cut in and out, and without the Army and civilian slicks, the people there would still be in a world of hurt. Those towns are at about 9000-11000 ft, so the winter comes really early there. Those that didn't have anything put away for emergencies would have died.

OK this is weird...I had a Root canal done a few years back (tooth with a dead nerve inside) and got it fixed somewhere in the 83 corridor. Walked in and there were all these statues and '50s memoribilia, from the early RnR thing. It went beyond decor to obsession, and gave me pause, as I sat there reading deep heavy literature with an eye towards improving my mind. (and let me tell you, it could use some improvement....) Does that sound like the same joint?

Does that sound like the same joint? Off Padonia Road, where the Gibbys restaurant used to be?? That's it! How many Elvis obsessed root canal only practices can there be!! My tooth is great - the rest of mouth is sore as all crap now from the clamps and dozens of needles!!

The attention of the Elder Gods is indeed as to horror as the benthic beast, covered in feline excreta and the regurgitate and solidus excretions of partially digested integumentary organs of a certain avian variant, is to comedy (at its own expense).
