Americans Still Prefer a Male Boss to a Female One

A Gallup poll released today finds that Americans, if forced to choose, would still prefer a male boss to a female one. While four in ten workers report no preference, 35 percent are happier with a man at the helm; 23 percent would rather take orders from a woman.

Any thoughts on this? I have had awesome bosses, both male and female. Is this sexist or just accurate?

I have had both, thought females were better in general with common sense.

I can tell you this: I judge bosses by their competence to be a boss, not whether they stand or squat to pee.

I had a liberal boss once but I couldn't whether he stood or squatted!  I think he was a squatter!

Interesting timing on seeing this thread. I was in a meeting yesterday with 13 other people. We represented 5 layers of the company from the CEO down to managers. I happened to notice that everyone in the room was a woman. The leader of our world-wide parent company is also a woman. And contrary to what one might expect, this is one of the most drama-free places I've worked.

Overall, though, I really couldn't care less whether my boss is male or female.

In general I find men easier to get along with a work. Bosses or not.

My last few bosses have been women - some I like others not so much. But as a secretary I know it is my job to make the boss look good when I feel like it.

This will probably convince davo that I am the far right troglodyte s/he considers me to be, but I have yet to work for a female that was worth her salary. I am not arguing that they are incapable of doing so; I've just not worked for one.

Depends on the person!!! I've noticed distinct styles, though.

When I have a male bad boss, they tend to be the types that generally ignore things, trend to lazy and incompetent, but blow up in anger easily and play blame games to avoid responsibility.

Bad female bosses tend more to micromanagement, shrill criticism of every small thing, and crazy interpersonal rants, "I'm not happy with the way you smiled at me this morning!!"

I've had good bosses of both genders, too!! The good ones tend to help out, have a good sense of humor, and have a high level of competence.
