in the game in DET. what does a fielder have to do to get charged with an error? absurd.

It's a highly subjective judgement. You'd think if the player got to the ball and dropped or misplayed it, that would be an error. But not always. It's also not an error if a player doesn't reach the ball, even if you think 31 other players at that position would have.

Castellanos is a lousy defensive third baseman to begin with, but that was a play he should have made. The only reason he stayed at third all season was the Tigers didn't want Miguel Cabrera back over there again. His ultimate future is probably in the outfield.
