Scherzer to the Nats for seven years. Like they needed another ace.
Kubatko apparently spoke to Angelos who said there is nothing to rumors Duquette is heading north.

The extra year aside, Scherzer's Washington contract isn't exactly a quantum leap from the six-year, $144 million extension he rejected from Detroit.

Washington is conducting its offseason like a team that wants to make the playoffs again. Baltimore is not.
It could be that Scherzer thought it would be easy to pull ten years, but with spring training on the near horizon started to worry. I've been wondering when the owners would stop offering contracts that are, post-steriod era, ridiculous: I don't care who you are, without steroids backing your abilities you're not with ten years. Too risky.

The extra year aside, Scherzer's Washington contract isn't exactly a quantum leap from the six-year, $144 million extension he rejected from Detroit. The Scherzer dealWorth around $26.4MM per year. Present day value depends on a lot of things; the deal is structured around D.C.'s tax laws, giving him an advantage. Present day value around $185MM. Depends what you consider a quantum leap, maybe, but it seems like he did very well for himself.

Half of the money is deferred, meaning that Scherzer will collect $15 million per annum for the next 14 years. Regardless of the payment schedule, a pretty handsome arrangement.

The Orioles have finalized a deal with Pittsburgh for outfielder Travis Snider, who the Orioles hope can help to fill the outfield void left by Nick's departure. The Pirates will receive pitcher Stephen Tarpley, a 21-year-old rated No. 14 on the Orioles' top 20 prospects list plus a player to be named later.
Well, it's something anyway.

I don't know anything about Snider, such as whether he's worth two players one of them a top 20 prospect. The Orioles farm system is poorly stocked with quality last I heard; the result of poor draft picks, an inability to develop talent, poor management, or some combination of those. Looks like, with 13 HR last year he's almost a drop-in replacement for Markakis in that category, with a better slugging percentage. He's probably a downgrade as a fielder, and his fielding percentage of .991 in '14 as an outfielder is poorer than Markakis' 1.000; Markakis had about double the chances. Upside, he's certainly less expensive and hopefully less of an injury risk.

James Shields, the last of the big-name free agent pitchers still on the market, has reportedly agreed to terms with San Diego for a reported four years and $75 million. There is also said to be an option for a fifth year. The Padres look to be going all-in on 2015.

They were not going to sign a big name pitcher. They are probably counting on Gausman to continue developing (I do not know if that will happen) and perhaps on Bundy. They also probably hope to capitalize on the Davis' and Weiters' final year here.

The Orioles are reportedly close to reaching a one-year deal with infielder Everth Cabrera. Good low-risk signing, but there are some legal concerns given his April 13 trial date for resisting arrest, which could result in possible jail time. He also served a 50-game suspension in 2013 for PED use.
Assuming Cabrera signs and his legal issues work themselves out, could this mean that Ryan Flaherty might be the odd man out? Like Flaherty, Cabrera can play multiple infield positions, but he probably has more overall upside.
