Lifeforms from Earth may touch down on Mars just a few years from now — but those interplanetary travelers would be plants, not people. A tiny, self-contained greenhouse has been selected to fly on the robotic lander that Red Planet colonization effort Mars One intends to launch in 2018, group representatives announced Monday (Jan. 5). The greenhouse experiment, known as Seed, was one of 35 proposed lander science payloads submitted by university groups around the world. Mars One whittled this original pool down to 10 finalists, and Seed was chosen by a monthlong public vote that closed on Dec. 31. www.space.com/28165-tiny-greenhouse-mars-one-colony.html

How about we study the planet first before possibly poisoning it with our own weeds?

But at least those weeds are edible by humans.

How about we study the planet first before possibly poisoning it with our own weeds? Would scientists ever lead us astray? Besides, it's government funded and regulated so no worries.

But at least those weeds are edible by humans. Munched on any Bella Donna, Hemlock or Foxglove lately?I'm gonna take a guess and say that we won't be sending any poisonous plants to Mars. However, should a Martian eat one of the plant we do send and suffers some ill effects as a result of doing so I sure he/she/it will be able to score big bucks by suing the U.S. govt. He/she/it would also be the 1st extra-terrestrial victim and, should he/she/it be any color other than White could immediately apply for entrance into Harvard under the affirmative action program.

I think next on the list are barley and hops... They'll need to find some Martian water first and then someone with a yeast infection...

Preparing for humans to spend time there. They will need to develop green houses to grow food. This is research leading up to that
