Sure, sure, it's not the *home* opener, but it's the opener. Let's hope for a great season!

Meanwhile, Nick Markakis has got to be wondering why in the hell he ever signed with Atlanta. The Braves fire sale continues with the trade of Craig Kimbrel and BJ (or Melvin, or whatever) Upton to San Diego for the always-injured Carlos Quentin, the only-slightly-less-injured Cameron Maybin, two minor leaguers and a draft pick. (So-called "competitive balance" picks may be traded during the season.)
Atlanta at least managed to get out from under that insane contract they gave Upton (I'm guessing that one of the conditions for San Diego acquiring Kimbrel was to take on Upton as well), but they could easily lose 100 games this season. Nick doesn't figure to be getting back to the postseason any time soon.

maybe he signed for the 44 big ones? I think you've broken the code! Nick probably realizes this is his last chance to cash in, and he wants to sock away plenty of money. Some guys, as long as they get paid, the post-season does not matter to them. Some guys attitudes change as they age and retirement is no longer past their perceptual horizon. I don't know if that's Nick, but it could be.

Well, that game was ugly. They're not gonna win 'em all, and the Jays have a lot of good hitters.
Let's hope Ubaldo comes out like the pitcher spring training showed he could be, and not like the pitcher he was last year.

Seven strong innings from Ubaldo tonight. Only one hit and one walk and he even kept the 3-2 counts down to a minimum (only four, I believe). If he's capable of pitching like this for the duration of the season, the Orioles have the makings of a strong staff.

I was pleasantly surprised by Ubaldo. He needs to keep working with the guy that got him turned around during the spring, if he has to pay the guy himself!

On the other hand, Tillman's outing was plain ugly, Gausman was dubious, and as last year, the bullpen was pretty solid. Even Matusz, which *really* surprised me. Buck left him in longer, I wonder if they are still shopping him? Snider work the goat-horns, then got to put them back on the shelf, but ultimately wore them for the game!
