I hope he has a good start tonight. I would love to see him be able to take Norris' place in the rotation.

If Gausman pitches well tonight, I wouldn't be surprised to see Norris put on the DL with an injury to be named later. That would at least give him the chance to get a couple of starts down in the minors and perhaps get himself straightened out somewhat. Should Gausman force the Orioles' hand, well, that's a dilemma which isn't necessarily bad to have.
Something is definitely not right with Norris. In his last start all four of his pitches wound up in the seats. His pitches just aren't moving and everything he's throwing up there is very hittable. Norris can still be an asset to the Orioles, but obviously not at this point. Gausman needs the regularity of a spot in the rotation right now. He's never going to get into any kind of rhythm when he's hopscotching from the rotation to the bullpen to the minors.

I don't know what Norris' problem is. Last year he was probably pitching above his talent; this year he's pitching below it. I understand (and hope the players appreciate) Buck's loyalty to those who have consistently produced - but right now, Norris is a huge liability.
And so many of those in the pipeline are getting hurt; I remain convinced there is something horribly wrong in the Orioles' minor league system. Someone down there just does not know how to do his job and for whatever reason the Orioles can't or won't fix it. Bundy, who I now believe will never pitch another major league inning for this club, is the latest casualty. This team simply cannot produce decent pitching.

Great start. Too bad about the offense. Buck's got to give him another one, doesn't he?

Gausman is still with the team, and Norris is still listed as a reliever, suggesting he'll be a long man. If he can do that job and no one offers him stupid money he might be a suitable replacement for Doormatusz (opponents walk all over him) who is certainly going elsewhere after this season (so will Chen, Davis, and Wieters, albeit for entirely different reasons).

Gausman got lit up tonight, but keep him in the rotation. It's the only way he'll ever be effective at this level as a starter. It's tough to play well when you're constantly looking over your shoulder.
One thing I've noticed about Gausman is that despite the fact that he throws hard, he strikes out surprisingly few batters. I think with experience those numbers will increase since he'll better learn how to set up hitters for the K. He also needs to come up with a third pitch since right now he's basically fastball-change. He has a slider but throws it so infrequently that hitters simply don't worry about it. If he learns to throw that third pitch consistently for strikes, it'll give hitters something else to think about.

I agree. they need to find out what they've got with him. they've seen enough of Norris to know.

He got demoted. But supposedly this is so he can get in a start during the All-Star break; he will be promoted immediately he's able to come back. So it is said, anyway.
This team tends to treat it's players like they're the ball in a paddle ball game. That would irritate me, especially if (as in the case of Chen) I'd demonstrated sufficient talent to earn a permanent spot. Maybe it's different with athletes. Of course, this isn't a team that needs to worry about hanging onto talent, because they generally don't. Once a guy gets where he can demand a big check, he's allowed to move on, with very few exceptions. That basic approach has worked well for the Ravens, but history has proven their front office personnel are more talented than their Orioles' counterparts. In particular this teams seems utterly unable to draft and/or train competent pitching. For this reason I regard the retention of Chen the highest priority of what I'll call the "Big Three" free agents (the others being Wieters and Davis). I actually don't expect Angelos will be willing to pay for any of them, but one can hope.
