... is what they should be at this point. They are a bad ball club. Get what they can for Davis, Wieters, maybe even Chen, and begin *another* rebuilding cycle. Oh, and let Duquette go if he wants to leave. We don't need another offseason featuring a disinterested executive. And for pity's sake Scroogelos, open the purse strings for the next guy! You're swimming in MASN cash. Spend some of it. Develop an honest commitment to winning, instead of the cynical "do the minimum necessary to put asses in chairs" imitation you've got now.

Chen and O'Day would probably be the most attractive players the Orioles could offer. Chen is a reliable starter and his payroll-friendly salary makes him a little more valuable. Tonight's game notwithstanding, O'Day would be a desirable pickup for a number of teams.
The Orioles' farm system is woefully thin right now (Baseball America ranked it 29th out of 30, and now, with both Bundy and Harvey on the shelf, it may on the bottom). There's no sense it burning what little is there on "this year" deals which aren't likely to lift the team out of the doldrums. The Orioles also don't figure to have enough land either Johnny Cueto (who is being linked to the Yankees, but then again, who isn't?) or Justin Upton.
If the Orioles can't find the right deal for Davis and/or Wieters, then ride it out and make them qualifying offers (which they'll certainly turn down) and take the draft picks. There's still a good core for next season with Machado, Jones, Schoop, Britton, Hardy and (possibly) Tillman. The cupboard isn't entirely bare.

Chen and O'Day would probably be the most attractive players the Orioles could offer. Chen is a reliable starter and his payroll-friendly salary makes him a little more valuable. Tonight's game notwithstanding, O'Day would be a desirable pickup for a number of teams. No pitcher is flawless, and after a lot of excellent outings, I can't fault O'Day for one bad one. It's just that the last few games have convinced me this team simply isn't good enough to go anywhere this season. Actually, I speculate that whoever wins the ALE will fall quickly in he post-season. (And why do we call it the post-season? Technically it's still the season. But I digress.) The Orioles' farm system is woefully thin right now (Baseball America ranked it 29th out of 30, and now, with both Bundy and Harvey on the shelf, it may on the bottom). There's no sense it burning what little is there on "this year" deals which aren't likely to lift the team out of the doldrums. I know it's a single digit percentage of the number of drafted players who even have a cup of coffee in the majors. But it sure seems like this team cannot develop pitching, which means they're going to have to acquire it. Bundy has a giant question mark next to him; I'm about 75% convinced he's a bust. Harvey may still make the show eventually. Everyone else is seasons off - by the time a lot of them are ready Manny will be wearing pinstripes. There are players to build around. Scroogelos just has to commit some cash so Duquette doesn't have to dumpster dive. Assuming he's still here. PGA handled that mess like a lawyer would, instead of like a human resources person would: when someone wants to move on, let 'em. They won't be committed to an organization they're chained to. I don't know if DD was distracted by the possibility he'd be heading north or if we just saw why he was unemployed as a GM for ten years, but he had a very bad off season. How much of that is him and how much of it is the shabby budget he has, I don't know. There have been a lot of managers, a lot of GMs, a lot of front office personnel over the years. But only one owner. In engineering when you've changed out a bunch of parts and still have problems, those parts weren't the cause. It's the part that hasn't been changed that's the cause. At this point, that's pretty much PGA, so I think the team's problems start at the top. I think Buck was a very lucky find and they'd have 20 losing seasons by now if they hadn't hired him. But I don't know how much longer he can work that kind of magic with a team that's probably a third AAAA guys. Or how much longer he'll want to. He would not wait long for a new job if he left when his contract ran out.

If they have plans to resign some of the pending free agents, then they should be buyers or hold pat. If they don't have any plan in place, then trade them for something instead of letting them go for compensation round draft picks. The Os picks are mostly a waste as they either pick badly or they develop talent badly.
