I have been on the fence about getting a tablet for a while. A lot of my internet access at home is done through my phone even though I have regular computers. My phone is always on me and accessible. While I love the portability and battery life (I have a motorola Razr Max HD), the screen is a bit wee and not all websites are suitable for mobile viewing.
My office gave us iPhone 4's a few months ago. I love being able to access my calendar and email while away from my desk. I do not like the puny keyboard. I don't expect that we'll get upgraded to iPads unless they suddenly become free like the iPhones. I was considering buying my own iPad and configuring it for work as needed.
If I buy an android device, I can't use it for work. We don't support android. While I wouldn't have a problem using it at home for reading, web surfing, etc..., I could never use it for work.
So here I sit on the fence. What do you tablet owners have to offer for advice? I honestly don't mind buying my own device and using it for work as long as it's my choice. I am leaning toward wifi only in order to not worry about the cost of data plans.

I have an iPad mini and a Kindle Fire also and I love them both. The iPad has a ton more apps available and it's super thin and light, but other than that, it's a toss up as to which I use..

Apple is the 700 pound gorilla in the room. If an app is going to be developed, it'll play on an Apple product first.
"Fragmentation" is a term you'll hear to describe Android. There are a lot of variations of hardware with Android, which Google has no control over. It's up to the hardware manufacturer - and in many cases, the vendor - whether an operating system upgrade will be available for a particular device.
I happen to prefer the level of customization available in the Android ecosystem. I got an iPad 2 when they came out three years ago because it was the only device that would run programs I wanted to use. It took another vendor to enter the arena to make an app for Android. It's now mature enough that I might be able to go Android when I'm ready for a new tablet.
If using your device at work is an important consideration, your decision is already made for you.

I have and iPad mini and a Kindle Fire.
While a ton of apps is nice, I have yet to find an app that I "need" that isn't available on both. What do you mean you can't use it at work? Is it forbidden? Is just that you can't ask questions? The android can probably still do what you want/need to do.
That said, I agree with douger, if using your device at work is an important consideration and you need/want their support, your decision is already made for you.

Our IT office does not support the android operating system. Apple's OS is the only portable OS we have other than blackberry...boo. My office provided me with an iPhone, which is better than nothing, but I'd love a bigger keyboard and screen to work with. At home I'm on my cell phone more than my laptop so I thought maybe I'd move up to a tablet for home use when I don't need to use a PC. I think I'd be happy with either tablet option except for not being able to take it to work.
I found out that I might be participating in the testing for our new remote access platform. If I do the test, I'll be provided my own laptop and docking station. I am not sure how often I'd bring the laptop to a meeting - it depends on how heavy it is to carry around. I am usually loaded down with notebooks, phones, and paperwork as it is.

I have a Kindle Fire for reading books and showing photos off I love it The Fire has that highly polished screen, unlike the Paper White. How does it do in sun/bright light? And can you disable that annoying Amazon minder service?

Santa brought me a Kindle Fire HDX. Although I cannot use it for work, I like it a lot. I've hardly had it out of my sight since Christmas Day.

The company I work for gave me an iPad mini to use when I'm not in the office. I guess because I refuse to have a cell phone of any kind. Now they can email me when I'm on the road visiting my sites. Anyway, it took a little getting used to at first but it’s pretty damn neat once you get the hang of it. I can do almost everything on it that I can do on my PC, and John Tiller has even put out a decent operational level war game I can play on it. I don't know the advantages or disadvantages compared to a tablet; though I suspect not having to deal with iTunes (a pain in the butt) is one of the pluses of not having an Apple product. In any case, I kind of like it. I wouldn't have paid $600.00 or whatever it costs myself, but since my bosses are paying for it, why not?

I got fed up waiting for Google to bring out the new 10 inch Nexus and ended up buying the Samsung Note 10.1 2014 edition. I'm well pleased, it's the bees knees and Apple proof to boot.

Can't/Won't go that route. Just got a new Cyberpower PC in Feb to replace my pushing 9yr old CP rig. The old one still runs but I figure it's gotta be ready to Quit any time. I mean 9 YEARS!!! Really??? The New rig has an 8 core AMD CPU, 8Gb RAM, 1Tb HD and a 128Gb SSD and a Radeon R7 Video card with a Blu-Ray/DVD burner running W7Pro for a tad over $750. The thing is Fast! Upgraded to a 24" monitor too for a little over $100 at Micro Center and it feels Huge. I have 2 Factory Refurbed Dell Lattitude laptops, both are 14" or 15" screens, haven't measured them in a while. The older one is at work and the Newer one on the end table by the couch downstairs. I don't think either one cost me any more than $250 from Dell's Ebay store. Mentioned my Phone on another thread. An HTC Desire 816 with a 5.5" screen with Virgin Mobile that just cost me $150 off Amazon after Virgin stopped carrying it. There's just no way I'd pay more than that for a Phone. Virgin is just $40/mo. for I think it's 4GB Data but I don't use all that much. Usually on my own or work Wi-Fi anyway. I've already complained on another post about the Lollipop update that ate about all of my 8Gb ROM in that phone, it's Under 1Gb Free now and can't do much else with it. My phone is mainly a phone that can do some other things but not much else. I don't have my Email acct on it except the Google one that I Had to make up but never use. Rarely use Chrome on it either, I have Bigger screens at work and home. Just don't have any use for a Tablet.
Guess there are PC/Laptop people and Tablet/Phone people. I'm in the 1st group.
