On Tuesday, the team announced they signed quarterback Ryan Mallett. It's a deal that could be worth up to $2.5 million in 2016, according to NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. The deal includes a $1.5 million base salary and up to $1 million in incentives, per Rapoport. Mallett will join a roster that currently has Jimmy Clausen at the wheel. Matt Schaub and Bryn Renner are also vying for playing time over the final stretch.

This seems like a move for the future in Baltimore. Schaub clearly isn't the answer behind Joe Flacco and the Ravens likely want to make their own evaluation on Mallett, who went from Texans starter to unemployed after he overslept and missed a team flight.

Mallett was good enough to back up Tom Brady for years, and attentive enough to appease Bill Belichick, so there must be something to like about the 6-foot-6 passer. Mallett has a cannon for an arm and, perhaps under the direction of quarterback whisperer Marc Trestman, he finds direction.

If nothing else, we might just get a chance to see one more Mallett fastball in 2015. A holiday wish everyone can appreciate.

O'Brien tolerated Mallett's missing a meeting the day after he was informed Hoyer won the competition but released the quarterback after he missed the team flight for Miami.

The Baltimore Ravens decided to sign Ryan Mallett after the quarterback assured them he has received professional help for personal issues that contributed to his downfall with the Houston Texans, according to a league source.

With the lowest completion percentage among active NFL quarterbacks, it’s probably safe to say Ryan Mallett never had much room to misstep off the field. After sleeping through a practice back in August, then the team flight to Miami over the weekend, then almost getting cut on the spot by Houston Texans head coach Bill O’Brien only to be saved by General Manager Rick Smith, the ax has finally fallen. He’s no longer a professional NFL quarterback, free to miss as many flights/practices as he’d like.



It’s going to be awfully hard not to connect some dots here, given his history. Sorry, we’re human; we see patterns. That’s what we do.



Mallett famously admitted to his drug use at the NFL Combine back in 2011 after being arrested at Arkansas for public intoxication as a redshirt sophomore two years prior, and while it’s pure speculation that his tardiness and general unreliability is the product of substance abuse, the narrative is already out there. Plus, given what we know about bullstuff excuses pro athletes give for missing early morning practices (ahem, Matt Harvey), Mallett’s “I got caught in traffic” explanation only contributes to suspicions that he’s staying out late

Oh, and then there was the time Mallett missed a meeting with Carolina Panthers team officials leading up to the 2011 NFL Draft, citing some mysterious sickness you acquire from staying out late in downtown Charlotte.




MALLETT MET TEAM OFFICIALS FOR DINNER APRIL 8, THE DAY HE ARRIVED IN TOWN, BUT MEETINGS THE NEXT DAY AT BANK OF AMERICA STADIUM WERE CANCELLED AFTER MALLETT CALLED AND SAID HE WAS SICK, MULTIPLE SOURCES TOLD THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL POST. IT LOOKS LIKE MALLETT WILL HAVE SOME MORE QUESTIONS TO ANSWER PRIOR TO NEXT THURSDAY. COMPLICATING THE MATTER IS THE FACT SOURCES SAID MALLETT WAS SEEN OUT ON THE TOWN LATE FOLLOWING THE DINNER.


Whether this has absolutely nothing to do with his dismissal or not — we literally have no idea — it’s fair to assume Ryan Mallett’s issues with control aren’t just limited to the footballs he throws.

Oversleeping is code for badly hungover. Do we want a poor man's Johnny Manziel here? He may be suitable as a backup, but he's no way, no how the future.

There were rumors of drug use while Mallett was still in college, although I don't think it was ever substantiated. The guy simply parties too much. Johnny Manziel 1.0.

What bothers me about Mallett is that he was drafted by the Patriots when Bill O'Brien was an assistant there, then moved to Houston after O'Brien got the head job and traded for him. He had a coach he was familiar with, who believed in him and basically handed him the starting job, yet he still pissed it away. How's he going to handle being a backup for the Ravens? If Flacco hasn't completely mended by the opener next season, is Mallett going to put in the time and preparation necessary to handle the starting job? Or is he going to be out whooping it up the night before the game?

A classic example of a million dollar arm and a 10-cent head.

There are limits, set forth in the collective bargaining agreement, on fiscal punishments. The CBA is the reason why, for example, the league administers the substance abuse policy and the fiscal penalties and suspensions that result certain personal fouls.
