Brandon Barker and Trevor Belicek will come to the Orioles. Matusz and a competitive balance pick to the Braves. It's the pick they want, for certain. The man selected fourth overall in 2008 is now worth a pair of 16th round draft picks. The Orioles haven't developed an ace since Mussina. Given Arrieta's comments, something is clearly broken in pitcher development. When will they fix it?

The Braves have added some $830,000 to their draft allotment pool as a result of this trade. They seem to be making sure that they'll have the resources to sign their first selection (No. 3 overall) and perhaps even go overslot with their next several picks. There's no guarantee that the 76th overall pick in the draft will ever become a bona fide major leaguer, but then again, Giancarlo Stanton was the 76th player selected in the 2007 draft.
Matusz actually rose very quickly through the Oriole system after being drafted in 2008, so I don't know if it's fair to say that the Orioles ruined him. After missing the first two months of the 2011 season, he just flamed out very quickly. His changeup, once his best out pitch--practically disappeared, the velocity on his fastball dipped south, and his control took a leave of absence as well. He was just never the same after that. I think he's just one in a long line of heralded prospects who stagnate short of their potential.

I just read an article that quoted Britton, saying essentially the same things Arrieta said. Basically, that Adair was clueless. We also have reports that Duquette is setting policy about what pitches the club will allow pitchers to throw (no cutters). That's way, way below where Duquette should be interfering.
I don't know if Matusz was poorly scouted, poorly developed, or just one of the guys who seems like a good idea but can't cut it at the major league level. But it seems very clear that pitcher development in the organization is broken in several ways. It took Buck too long to get rid of Adair and he was too kind when he did it.
Arrieta made some of the kind of mistakes young people make, creating a blog. But he probably wasn't wrong about Bergesen's mechanics (judging by the fact that Bergesen never amounted to anything), and I'll bet he was right about veterans coming to camp out of shape, which to me is inexcusable. Yet Buck allowed the veterans to bully him.
Buck does many things well, I like him and I hope he can keep winning. But pitchers may be a weakness.
