Orioles cho-cho-choose Cody Sedlock, RHP, a product of U Illinois, at #27.

Never heard of him. Then again, I've never heard of most of the guys who are taken in the MLB draft. Unlike the NBA or NFL drafts, most of these guys spend their amateur years toiling anonymously.
Hopefully the Orioles can start to develop some starting pitching (they've had pretty good luck with relievers) and not have to rely on godawful signings like Ubaldo. A prosperous farm system is the only way to keep pace with the well-heeled Red Sox and Yankees.

I approximate that 5% of pitchers reach the majors and are effective there, based on looking at some lists across a number of teams. Of that number, fewer still are legitimate aces. The Orioles drafted quite high for a number of years and should have developed more quality pitching, but they are either poor at drafting or poor at developing talent or both. They have developed no legitimate aces since Mussina. It is possible that Gausman is on that path and there are a few others (Bundy, Harvey) who make reach that pinnacle, but these men are not there yet, IMO.
Pitching is expensive and Angelos is cheap. I suspect that is the genesis of "buy the bats, grow the arms". But if you really want to win (and Angelos really seems not to), then you must spend some money on quality help in the minors and in scouting, you have to find failures like Adair much more quickly than they did (or better yet, discover their flaws before you hire them), and for pity's sake Duquette, let the people you supposedly trust decide, case by case, what pitches a developing player should throw. Because they almost did develop an ace in Arrieta - but organizational bungling meant he was destined to be someone else's ace.

The Orioles drafted pitching most heavily. I don't know how that compares to other teams. They drafted Palmeiro's kid - hope he knows players have to pee now.
