The Chris Sale trade has been referred to as a value for value overpay by a team that was capable and willing to do so. No one else was reportedly in the same ballpark as the Red Sox regarding offers for Sale. And how did the Red Sox land the Cuban defector in the first place? By forking over $63 million for him.
Yoan Moncada was rated as baseball's No. 1 overall prospect this past season by Baseball America, and it is the first time in 20 years that a player with such a designation was traded while still holding that status. The other top prospect in the trade, Michael Kopech, was limited by injuries last season, but he's hit as high as 105 mph on the radar gun. It's a high price, but that's what it was going to take to land one of the top lefthanders in the majors with an extremely team-friendly contract for the next three seasons.
What is a bit surprising is that Boston was able to do this deal with prospects only while leaving their major league roster intact. One would have expected the White Sox to demand someone like Eduardo Rodriguez or Jackie Bradley, Jr. as part of the trade.
