While this sailor deserved recognition it should NOT have been a carrier. Carriers have been traditionally named after Battles like Lexington, Saratoga, Antietam and Yorktown to name a few and presidents. If they had to name it after a deserving black sailor it should have been at least an Airedale that also gave his life and that would be Ens. Jesse L. Brown, NOT a blackshoe. The Navy after all IS the "Traditional Service". Petty Officer Miller should have had a destroyer or cargo vessel named after him. What's next, they already have a USNS Harvey Milk... or even worse a Autumn Sandeen???

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_L._BrownYou are inaccurate. America, Independence, Hornet, Ranger and Enterprise were not named for battles. And Vinson, Forrestall and Nimitz were not named for Presidents.

They made more Essex class than anything else..... what was she named after, what was the majority of her class named after? Carrier names were steeped in Revolutionary war battles and figures, later more recent battles. (Coral Maru and Midway for example) There have been 27 just glancing at names named after battles, others after HISTORIC ships. Before CVA 42 very few were not named after battles or early ships (Rosie being a exception) Zippo more or less started the current trend. My point stands, Ens. Brown would have been a better choice, first black pilot KIA. Doris would be a great choice for a can which was knows for it's guns or maybe even a aux type.
