My guess is that Angelos, bitter that he paid Roberts for several years of no playing, simply refused to re-sign him at any price.

who knows. Hard to justify any $ on him since he barely plays anymore. Of course, now that he's in NY, he will go on to have a career year & retire w/ a world series ring.

From an Oriole management point of view I could see why they would be hesitant on resigning him. They already paid him $40 million for 1 year of playing time.

True, if you take what they got in return on that contract, he has actually the highest paid player in baseball..

Hell, at 36 Roberts represents a youth movement for the Yankees. Their entire infield should be sponsored by AARP.

The handwriting was on the wall for him when they signed some mope who will keep second base warm until Schoop is ready. That was just a couple of weeks ago and I've already forgotten his name.
Not having Roberts isn't going to break the team. Not having quality starters who can go deep and not having more than one quality hitter playing outfield is what's going to keep them from winning.

Starting pitching is very scarce, and it's always a huge risk to take the plunge into free agency in order to acquire it. I thought the inflated prices for lesser lights such Ricky Nolasco, Phil Hughes and Scott Feldman might put considerable upward pressure on the higher end pitchers who are available, but thus far, that doesn't appear to be the case. The market doesn't seem to have yet developed for the likes of Matt Garza, Ubaldo Jiminez and Ervin Santana.
Santana is reportedly looking for a nine-figure deal, a ridiculous amount for a guy who can hardly be considered an ace and comes with draft compensation attached. I think the flurry will begin if and when Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka is posted. It's likely going to cost some team $120 million (the $20 million posting fee included) or so to sign him, but at least he won't cost compensation. Matt Garza might be intriguing, although I don't see the Orioles getting involved (what else is new?) unless his market tanks. Supply and demand is likely going to make him worth more than he really is, but at least he won't cost a draft pick. If the Orioles do sign a starting pitcher, I'd expect it to be someone like Bronson Arroyo.
