that is interesting about Oakland and Detroit. The As were looking like a mortal lock after the trade.

I'm a little worried that Manny, who has a lot of raw talent, lacks the necessary pain threshold and/or durability it takes to play baseball at the professional level.

I'm a little worried that Manny, who has a lot of raw talent, lacks the necessary pain threshold and/or durability it takes to play baseball at the professional level. I've wondered myself at times if he doesn't have a bit of prima donna in him. But he's 22 and even though that was a long time ago, I can say with certainty that I didn't always display the utmost maturity at that age. At least he doesn't appear to be Bryce Harper-like obnoxious and if he can just stay healthy, I think he'll go down as one of the best third basemen in the history of the game.
A three-game sweep tonight of the Sox in Chicago. A good outing by Chen, some clutch relief work by O'Day and just enough offense. The Yankees lost again, so the lead is nine on the Jays and nine-and-a-half on New York with 38 to play. Things are certainly beginning to look rosy and--even though I don't think it's that important--finishing with the best record in baseball is not out of the question at this point.

Awesome. This is like when I started watching them in the 70s as a boy. Then it was mildly surprising to me when they lost.

Goddamn Arrieta. It would figure that he'd start pitching lights out after being traded away from here. I guess that proverbial "change of scenery" actually did some good in his case; the guy's doing pretty well for himself with the Cubs.

It's frustrating when the Orioles make supposedly washed up noodle arms look like the second coming of Cy Young.

What an awful weekend of baseball. Let's hope they can come back against the Rays...

If someone had told me at the beginning of the season that the Orioles would be six games up heading into the last week of August, I'd have taken that in a heartbeat.
Now if they get swept by the Rays, I reserve the right to start panicking.

I did not expect them to be swept by a last place team or manhandled by pitchers who could do nothing at all here...

I did not expect them to be swept by a last place team or manhandled by pitchers who could do nothing at all here... Me either, and I wonder if the team has been mentally affected by Manny's injury. Terrible series, and right now the biggest weakness of the O's is that offense goes peculiarly silent at the worst times.

Good bounce back win tonight against the Rays. It's feast or famine with this offense: tonight five homers, tomorrow they won't be able to get a ball out of the infield. MF Yankees won again, so the lead remains at six. Toronto lost and they're beginning to look as though they won't be much of a factor in September.

Great job by the bullpen tonight in a 4-2 in over the Rays. As I suspected, no home runs, but just enough timely hits to make the difference. Both starters really labored in what had to be the longest damn 4-2 game in the history of baseball. Maybe they were getting paid by the hour.
Yankees were beaten by the Tigers, 5-2, so the O's lead is now seven with just 32 to play. The Yankees went down 1-2-3 in the ninth against Joe Nathan, which, considering how atrocious Detroit's bullpen has been, really should count as two losses.

Just goes to show how hard it is to overcome a deficit as large as the Yankees face. They go on their best hot streak of the year, and the O's get swept by a crappy Cubs team, and then a couple of days later find themselves still 7 games out.
The Jays are pretty much done, even for a WC berth.

Goddamn David Price. Eight runs in the third inning against the Yankees tonight and now they're six back again. Maybe Tampa truly did get the better of this deal since Smyly was lights-out tonight against the Orioles.

3 of 4 from the Rays with the Twins up next!
Went to the game last night. Glad they won, but man are games long these days. Getting as bad as a football game. Great move by DD getting Miller to replace Matusz.

Arguably the best of all the deadline deals. The price might have been a bit steep, but Miller has been well worth it thus far.

The Ubaldo era needs to be over. It's clear the man can no longer pitch at the major league level. Duquette needs to write off the dollars and cut him. But it ain't gonna happen. I imagine they'll try to deal him in the off-season, so they recover at least *something* from the disaster.

If Jiminez could learn to locate his fastball, he might again become a serviceable pitcher. No matter what a pitcher's repertoire, everything comes off the fastball. But he won't throw the damn thing. He just keeps throwing breaking ball after breaking ball, gets behind in the count, and either walks the hitter or gets launched.
Chen was a classic example today of how a good fastball goes a long way. He doesn't break any radar guns, but he kept pumping first-pitch fastballs in for strikes to get ahead in the count. That's the secret, and Ubaldo would do well to learn it.

I don't know how they retrain (if that's the word) Ubaldo. It would be great if they could, but try suggesting to a veteran that he needs to play winter ball. He's not going to be interested. He'll just force the team to pay him by refusing to retire. Plus, he needs to rest his arm over the off-season.

Tonight was a lot closer than it needed to be. Nice job by Schoop on the game-ending double play. I'm becoming more and more of a fan of that guy.
The lack of Machado at third is beginning to show somewhat. I honestly think I'd rather see Davis over there. Hopefully when Pearce gets back the O's will return to that alignment.
