I am thoroughly loving it (this time around I get to be home for 3 weeks before having to go back to California). It felt 'right' to be here as the leaves were changing color and there was an actual Autumn. We might be in for just a little bit of snow sooner rather than later and I am excited about the dogs getting their first taste of frozen water falling from the sky! The goats have turned into little fuzzballs as the temperatures have changed and seem to be adapting to the colder weather. During my time here, I have gotten two things out of the way that I always wanted to do but could not do in California (time wise or otherwise). One of which was to get my HCP and the other was to get the motorcycle endorsement on my license. The efficiency of the state, here, and the people working at our local DMV have been great in comparison to California. We have tickets to go see the Diamond Caverns in Park City, KY but that might have to wait until I get back from my next jaunt across the country. Glad to hear it! My in-laws would live for us to move to TN. I used to say "no way" but lately it is looking like a possibility, thanks to the wonderful leadership of this fine state (sarcasm intended). Who knows what will happen when we retire, I still have to get my kids through college!! Did I say no state taxes on personal earned income? Now, I but merely have to survive the White Death that is turning the local environs into Jotunheim itself.

Last march I took the ferry from ak to Washington state, drove to Colorado . Then drove back to Alaska. I stopped and fished in the rind river mountains of Wyoming and also the Bob Marshall wilderness in Montana. The south fork of the flathead river is one of the most beautiful waters I've ever fished . Full of cutthroats. The rest of the drive is incredible. British Columbia is amazing as is Yukon.

Tell ya a story though, about 30 years ago, Mrs. Para (yes we're still married) and another couple, who were long time friends took an AMTRAC train trip. We left Baltimore, headed west over the northern route and got off (the train) in Vegas. We stayed in Vegas for 2 nights, and rented a car and drove south to Arizona, checking out the Grand Canyon on the way.
We boarded another AMTRAC train for the southern, eastbound route, ending up in Atlanta and changed trains for the final leg up to B-more.
We were in our early 30's back then. The train ride was the most fun part, most folks there were twice our age, (they were quite randy, BTW.) but they were the greatest people in the world to party with! Some of the old guys kept hitting on our wives, but it was kinda funny anyway. Not to mention that we saw a good part of the interior of the country without driving much at all.
We did it in about '83. It was expensive, we saved for years for it I think the base tab was 7K for the 4 of us.
In a manner of speaking, we got to see a good part of the country without ever boarding an airplane.

Trains are cool- my mom loved to travel cross country via Amtrak.

It's quicker, and cheaper, to fly, for most travel. That's why passenger trains have been socialized. Sad, too- I have traveled that way once, and it was neat- dining car, snack and lounge cars, double decker with stairs and such....

We even were able to do fun weird stuff like buy cocktails, smoke (when I still did that nasty thing), and play cards with random midWesterners!

"Don't be afraid to make mistakes, to stumble and fall because most of the time the greatest rewards come from doing the things that scare us the most. Maybe you'll get everything you wished for. Maybe you'll get more than you ever could have imagined. Who knows where life could take you. The road is long and in the end the journey is the destination." I don't know the source, however I like the quote.

We went on a 24hr Murder Mystery train ride to Coppenhagen when we lived in Germany for New Years Eve one year an it was AWESOME. The ride back the next day was beautiful, it was snowing and so peaceful!!
